It appears neither the main sheet or traveller failed. They can be seen in the photos.

I imagine it differently.

They are trudging through with heavy seas and moderated wind. The traveller is tugging in the hard dodger, it starts to flex. They pick up on this but what to do? Yes...

Am I correct in assuming the traveller was attached to the dodger roof?

Didn’t take them long to break up the wreck and get rid if it.

Probably wont help the investigation much.

I think I am looking at the cabin too being destroyed.

The sky is the limit in speculation. For all we one of them could have had a medical emergency at a particularly bad time. Or any of a myriad of things.

Up at 4am, in their 70’s, it could be as simple as inattention or nodding off or disoriented.

All those things have happened to us, but for the grace of God, the consequences have been minimal, so...
