Your comment was stated somewhat crassly but may have hit the nail on the head. Their distance to home is not that far, and not vetting the boat first, it sounds like inexperience which seems common...

Sounds like sound advise. Might not hurt to take a swim and insure the intake and prop aren't fouled. I've seen a bunch about carbon in the exhaust elbow, I can't speak to that.

You may be correct? Cynical may be the wrong term. It may have the connotation of wishing failure. I'll look it up. I thought a cynic was not trusting a particular view point.

If a vessel is under tow, they are required to open. Unfortunately this sounds like it shouldn't be the case.

I believe you nailed it. Someone onboard to offer advise would have no liability if not paid. A two liter bottle of Wild Turkey or as SC calls it Kicking Chicken might be in order, after the fact..
