Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

Yea, a cat is 80% windage. A whole range of different problems to a monohull. Not saying worse, just different.

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

Tyres are great things to have aboard. They make much better fenders than shop brought ones if you are tied to the sea wall in a storm - I have dents to prove it :P
Though you don't need to carry...

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

Hehe, I was wondering about that too... I guess she meant a motorcycle wheel though.

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

There is no reason to get things tangled up with a fore-n-aft anchoring. Rarely will the tidal range be greater than the length of the ship. I row my second anchor out (although the tide does most of...

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

Also, if what you're doing works for you, then stick with it, of course. But I would say to others that want to try a fore-n-aft anchoring and are having issues like that (even with the rudder...

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

Car tyres are useful for this, they also make good roll preventers if filled with rocks or concrete and lying horizontally, not that you need that on a cat.

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

Yea, sometimes there is not a choice in some areas if everyone is doing it, as you don't have room to swing. Conversely, if no-one is doing it, you can have problems with people entering the...

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

I see what you're saying, although it wouldn't apply to a canoe stern monohull, and the rudder can be locked. But yes, as always, it depends on your situation. Though personally I disagree, i had no...

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

I was talking about a second anchor from the stern, so that the boat is always facing the same direction, with the tide either coming from the bow or the stern. Though I guess you meant the two...

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

I'm not sure that would help in OP's situation though. In their case it sounds like the conditions caused them to go forward directly over their tackle.

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

I meant in general. I have anchored like that on Gran Bahamas Banks with no problems. But then I'm a freediver and always check my gear and the bottom. I am not 100% clear on why you think 2 point...

Re: Heavy tide swing, bridle coming backwards between the hulls.

Imo, using a stern anchor in heavy tidal flow is always the best option. Other potential issues aside, you cannot guarantee that your anchor will do a 180o reset on every tide without fouling...
