Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem

20V is fine for PWM, but I've seen 12V nominal go higher.

MPPT needs much higher, usually 40+V, and better to get that with one panel rather than series'ing

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem

That controller is too cheap, can get for $6 incl free sipping from China. Not adjustable to take the battery up to charge specs, won't last long.

Spend $100 get a Victron 75/15, very robust...

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem

Yes, have yet to see a controller I'd choose other than Victron for under $100.

And old-school Specialty Concepts ASC, excellent for weather exposure, but the AF or AEF options are hard to find...

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem

Yes I was not talking about "running" all day.

Heating a thermal mass, would enable the water thermostatic control based on very low air temps near the critical location.

Even in arctic...

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem

A minimal solar setup will keep the diesel heater going 24x7 unattended until it runs out of fuel, about a gallon per day.

Yes safety issues, but no more than any other active solution.

But...

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem

The thermal mass can be below, easy to rig a little case fan + radiator, with passive circulation don't even need a pump.

Same unit for hot water service, preheating the engine block for the...

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem

I would NOT recommend DC low-volt direct space heating, really is a non starter, cross it right off unless you're talking 1000w solar.

Unattended auto-start genset, or the diesel "parking heaters"...

Re: Solar, off grid and heat problem

Producing any significant heat from stored off-grid power is a non-starter except for very large systems, especially if solar-only.

Add an auto-starting generator to the mix and anything is...
