Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

3 strings paralleled is a good guideline for maximum to avoid problems from imbalances. Past four def pushing things.

No product categories have zero failures.

Telecom sets yes are very...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Yes, for me quality supplies, solid terminations and oversized wires are a given.

As an example, I was happy to pay $300+ for crimpers on eBay, a major bargain since the cheapest new price is over...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

not in the results, I've seen wildly unbalanced batts in a very short time, there are proof youtubes out there as well

obviously when space and placement are not ideal there is a conflict between...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Wonder if physical rotating the order? Or periodically swapping the neg/pos ends?

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

That is very cool.

I like the thought of you, he and Rod working together up in Maine conspiring to make the world of marine electrics a better place.

I'll make it up there with the kids for a...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

I won't do that even with FF, really want to maximize longevity, for me their unique properties are for exigencies "just in case".

Since the "lower than usual currents" part of the breaking in...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

So you define that zero SoC as 10.5V, as standard?

And do you think the "commission charging" protocol outlined here https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2468543

is generally...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

But say sticking with 12V systems not higher, how many 12V "units" in parallel would be OK?

Getting away from Firefly, say strings of 6V or 2V, or 12V batts, isn't there something to the "don't go...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Excellent report, very reassuring.

So the multiple 20-hour load testing, you go all the way down to 10.5V as standard, each time?

That's a pretty rigorous "break-in", usually you'd just do that...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Separately from the Firefly issues, not just Bruce, sorry for so many Qs:

If one needs large capacity, but doesn't want to deal with batts weighing hundreds each,

Would you recommend going to...

Bruce, thanks for the update, and for being overall so transparent about this transition period for Firefly.

Stay in touch with Bruce Schwab @ OceanPlanet to find out when the US-based team have approved the...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

No, 4's OK but 8, 10, 12?

I've seen many trusted posters say you really should be going to a higher cell capacity like 2V to get fewer strings, 3-4 being the upper limit rule of thumb

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Zombie thread, so much misinformation, really would have been better to let it lie.

But OK.

I'm not saying I find the claim at all credible myself, but. . .

Isn't the rule of thumb to not...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Laughably false, and further evidence to me it's not worth paying attention to anything you might have to say.

Not at all. Pick your own definition, just don't pretend the distinction itself is...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

I have not seen any evidence the 12V "Duracells" are in fact East Penn Deka, nor true deep cycle. I'd suspect neither.

I stated long ago, my definition for that term is 800+ cycles at 50%. And...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Which is what I meant by getting ripped off.

I know of no 12V battery sold through mass retail that meet any definition of true deep cycle, all "dual purpose" really starters. Sam's GC2 are known...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

A set of quality true deep cycle batteries, cared for properly, routinely lasts 6-8 years out in the real world, sometimes 10-12.

If you're getting less than that, maybe you're getting ripped off...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

I have never thought 2V suits anything but the hugest banks.

All banks have fuses.

The extra circuitry for LFP has nothing to do with life-threatening danger, just protection of the investment....

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Completely misleading basis for comparison. Not a battery manufacturer, and most famous in NA markets for being crazy overpriced.

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

Who manufactures the "Duracell" labeled GC2s available from Sam's or B+ for <$180 per 12V 200+AH.

Yes, barely meets many definitions of true deep cycling lifetime specs, but I'd **really love** to...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

False, if you mean the proprietary "integrated solution$".

Overvoltage and low temperature cutoffs are critical to protect the bank from expensive damage are all that's different from LA to LFP.

Did you read them yourself?

Only the first is about LFP, and confirms what I said.

The rest have nothing to do with LFP.

Note I'm not saying you can't find something if you look hard enough,...

Re: Wiring In Series (pro vs con)

I don't know of anyone using Lithium Ion chemistries that have thermal runaway problems for House banks.

LiFePO4 does not.
