Regarding leeward daggerboard, correct, raise first to prevent tripping. The area of the one daggerboard is enough once a certain speed is reached. For raising, at 50% area there isn’t that much load...

On the Outremer I haven’t had weather that had us under bare poles, so now I’ll be writing from experience but not direct from the O55.

Yup, been there done that with reefing in wind and big seas. First off, a 55 foot boat is much more stable than a smaller boat, so it does depend on having the length.
