Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Just a units problem. The same sort of thing that turned an expensive space probe into a hole on the surface of Mars.

200 FEET would be about right for a Panamax or Post Panamax ship.

AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

On the last trip from Melbourne to Adelaide in early 2013 we were passed by maybe a dozen ships in any 24 hour period. Looking at the marine traffic density maps I’d guess most of those would have...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Begs the question, if a ship passes in the night, and the CPA alarm doesn’t sound....

Actually, I’m not sure where I was going with that.

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Can I just say, in my defence, I didn’t say anything against thread drift per se. I just mentioned that the whole “to solo or not to solo” debate is raging elsewhere and I didn’t want it to creep in...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Ouch! I had that coming! Fair call. [emoji846]

Another interesting approach to AIS alarms to consider too. Thank you.

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Thanks Jim, that’s a great idea. I was toying with the idea of a quick pressure clean before the journey. Not essential, she’s pretty clean, but if I do I’ll add what you suggest.

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

It's pretty well flush with a slight jump up from the base of the keel to the rudder from memory. Maybe an inch or two up, and a small gap, also an inch between the back of the keel and the leading...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Excellent! A very nuanced approach, thank you. I think I for one will be trying this out, just to see how it feels. Not how I would have originally considered using AIS myself.

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Thank you Jim. A different mix of numbers again to those previously suggested. And from one of the faster boats in the fleet on CF.

Interesting to try to interpret that if I can. Will think...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Thanks Ann, yes, definitely plan to cross that major shipping channel at a sharper angle, that red line is not exact. Thanks for the tips about possible anchorages. I have a fall back option of...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Hey Ann, my question was general in nature, but yes, prompted by a planned trip. I've got a six or seven day passage from Adelaide to Hobart coming up, early November in all probability. The...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Sorry conachair, missed your valuable contribution. Good point about alarm behaviour for us to consider. Ok, the alarm wakes us up, we decide the identified vessel is no threat, how do we clear the...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Yes, there have been some great discussions here on CF about single handed sailing.

But I’m trying to keep this one focused on AIS alarms because the whole single handed thing is so contentious. ...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Yes, very true. Not so many on the passage I am going to take though. And I will still be using the old eyeball in the usual way.

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Yeah, good point. Three seconds to be standing at the wheel.

THEN realising I’ve jumped right past the AIS plotter in the deckhouse. So scramble around to the plotter, figure out where the ship...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Hmmm... Alchemy and Clivevon both used 20 minutes in their excellent analysis of the situation.

Funny that, because I had previously felt 20 minutes sounded about right with no real logic to...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Yes, for sure, if napping, set it wide, just trying to figure out how wide for that phase, and, i guess, how wide for normal running in open oceans.

As for getting into action... the Swannie is...

Re: AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

Yes, finding that balance seems to be the trick.

I've got a long journey ahead, parallel with a shipping lane for about three days. Thinking of standing off from the lane of normal traffic by...

AIS CPA and TCPA for Solo Sailors

While there seems to be quite a bit of discussion around solo sailing, one question I have not found directly addressed is the issue of AIS CPA (Closest Point of Approach) and TCPA (Time to Closet...
