Re: Heeling!

It seems that the scientific consensus does not support the "fear makes people seasick" or "it's all in the mind" narrative. The consensus seems to be that a) individual susceptibility is...

Re: Heeling!

This seems intuitively so. If the science thus far says that sensory conflict likely causes motion sickness, then that conflict is surely increased when inside a "house" that is tilted over, and up...

Re: Heeling!

Thank you, Evan!

Our cruises are generally a month or so during summer. I seems (now) that after two weeks on the boat, some sea legs have indeed been acquired.

With two hundered miles more...

Re: Heeling!

Cheers, thank you, and wonderful that you wound your solution! We actually have that in Finland as well, under the brand name Postafen. Will surely try it once we get some :thumb:

Re: Heeling!

We did, last year! (https://nakedsailor.blog/2019/08/01/to-mariehamn/)

And I agree. I've visited Pommern and the museum many a time since I was a child myself. It's always great, and the children...

Re: Heeling!

Yes, it is too late, and I thought we got the small sailboat

Anyway, the anti-histamine pills definitely seem to do some some good for the one kid who still has problems with...

Re: Heeling!

:thumb: They all respond differently but generally they are fine on land  We've experienced some mild car sickness as well, though.

Thank you for your interesting thoughts!

On thing...

Re: Heeling!

Yes, I feel the same, that there’s an optimal amount of heel where the motion is ”in the groove”. And yes, fear has a lot to do with it for one of the kids. For the other, I think the physical side...

Re: Heeling!

Almost no heeling, yes. And I don't think it's a sensible or realistic idea to sail around (in a monohull like our's) and always trim for less heeling than in the picture.

In Turku, the...

Re: Heeling!

It wasn't a jib in the picture, it was a code zero, btw!

But regarding the heeling, I don't really understand how you add up the physics to support your statement of no heeling unless close to...

Re: Heeling!

Thanks!

The data is from my raspberry logs selected into 'buckets'. The visualization is done manually in powerpoint, I think :)

Yes, that's the complet dataset from last summer and almost...

Re: Heeling!

Yes, I've looked at the precise heeling data (example pic below from last summer). I'm not recording any exact data points for "amount of seasickness" to correlate, however, but I kind of assume that...

I'm a bit overwhelmed by the number of replies! I've read them all carefully and here's a collective Thank You to you all!

And a summary of my own thoughts after reading them:

1) We've been in...

Re: Heeling!

Yes, measuring both from the physical and electronic compasses. "10 degrees" was just an approximation, though, meaning "noticeable heel".

I think it's a function of a lot parameters, of course,...

Yes! This we have done! And you are right, and we will do more of it :)

Re: Heeling!

Yes, I did some singlehanded sailing all spring before we thought it warm enough for the family to join. It was fun. I won't keep the boat to do just that, though.

I might disagree just a bit...

Re: Heeling!

I think too, that the seasickness topic is very interesting. Having watched the kids and my wife quite closely they all take it very differently. For one, the fear (of tilting, the noises, etc) is...
