Yep, Hawaii is all "downhill" and usually pretty nice weather and pleasant water temperatures. Going to Seattle is "uphill" against the waves, winds and currents and the splashes coming over the rail...

I think it has more to do with the rig and the way it is laid out and what mechanical advantages are employed, more than length. But I'd personally probably draw the line under 40' somewhere.
