Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Is there a lot of wave action there? I am kind of surprised about the hull breaking up, though I could imagine the deck separating from the hull... so two large masses of fiberglass, minus the lead;...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Are there any buoys marking the wreck right now?

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

I thought the plan was to clean up their mess. If they don't, my opinion of their misadventures changes dramatically.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Perhaps the initial blow took out 2 or 3 bolts, leaking began, and wobbly lead, still attached, gave some righting effort until the rest of the bolts gave up the ghost as the boat rocked in the...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

That shot is the clearest yet showing the keel gone. The part visible is the stub that the lead is bolted to.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Just an FYI, to quote Bruce Krohn over at the Columbia owners group (This has been a big topic of discussion there too):

"My data indicates that the lead keel is attached with 7, 3/4" X 8" lag...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

hmmm... yes we have all read about how harsh a teacher the sea can be but I often tend to think of the sea as very merciful actually. The fact that these kids lost the keel so close to shore in 4...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Huh. So it does seem to be the 28. And I guess they have (had) been in the habit of (somehow) getting it beached. BTW, I looked at the comments folks have left at the gofundme page.... pretty rough,...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Well, it matters little, but I based my assumption on the fact that the boat in the photo appears pulled up onto a beach, which you could do with the 31 but not the 28. The cabins are very similar.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Hmm well curiouser and curiouser then.... I suspect they actually have a 28 but got that photo off the internet because they weren’t sure what they had. I only say that because it is harder to...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

I could be wrong but I believe that is a shot of a Columbia 31 which has a shoal draft keel.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

My guess is prior to flooding, yes, but once water is in there, being a "free surface," then it will lose stability as the weight of the mast will likely overwhelm whatever remaining ballast there is...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Could be, like some remnant of some kind of steel framework jutting up from the sand in shallow water, but still submerged. Hopefully we'll get some more info or photos of the recovered boat, but...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

As much as I love and prefer my long molded-in keel, I wouldn't agree we'd need to write off all old bolt-on keels. I know of at least one ol' Columbia 43, same kind of keel and stub structure, that...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

I find most of their sins forgivable in light of their youth and inexperience. How many folks here would have known to replace those keel bolts? How many here would have known to avoid that spot...

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Yeah they had a good rep, those 28s, but it is an old boat so the bolts should have been replaced.
But I am curious about the "lost everything" .. and the "no savings, no job..." what were they...
