I was inspired as a young-un by a guy who used to sail his Valiant 40 just about everywhere, he eschewed engine use, and a friend who had an engineless Cal 40....

I'm kind of surprised this has generated so much heat. Is it not safe to say, if you are out sailing in rough weather, or any kind of weather, eventually you will need to go forward for SOME problem...

For me having lines led aft was less complicated rather than more. I guess it depends on what you are running and where and if there is room for it all under a dodger or whatever.

Ha! All good points. I used to lay out the jib halyard before releasing it for just that reason! Then as I went forward I'd pull the halyard through.

Well, I hank on and I like the lines led aft. My current boat doesn't have it that way yet though. One negative is you'll have more lines in the cockpit so keep em neat. Now, if you run all the reef...
