Another look at Solar Powered refrigeration on sailboats

I believe Solar powered refrigeration on sailboats is a title that leads to a little misunderstanding.
Yes there are modules that are made that will operate in very variable voltages, I believe...

You have an unusual holding plate it seems, this is their usual plates.

It’s interesting that is shows a dual plate configuration as well....

I guess I’m playing both sides of the fence, cause I don’t see what is exotic about a tank full of largely water. All a cold plate system is, is a thin plate evaporator placed into a water tank....

I had one of those smart controllers, it worked off of voltage that you could adjust voltage points.
In order to prevent voltage sag from messing with it, it only looked at voltage at turn on, if it...

117 times a Day is sort of way out there, the AEO module for instance wouldn’t allow that. If your cycling anything close to that then your temp set points are set way too close and or you have...

That is likely the missing piece then, the “flywheel effect” if you don’t mind me misusing a term, smoothing out the spikes if you will.
However wouldn’t a freezer or fridge full of food to some...

Pete, I hope you don’t mind me jumping in.

But I would hope the test was run with everything already at a stasis point, meaning already cooled down and stable. Otherwise there would be so many...

Re: Another look at Solar Powered refrigeration on sailboats

I think your right as long as, and this I believe is key that the thin plate evaporator was sized so that it didn’t have to run at a colder temp than the cold plate does.
If it has less surface...

I don’t really know, and it’s my opinion that duty cycle isn’t as relevant with an AEO module, reason is the AEO will control the compressors speed to reach the desired cycle time and therefore its...

The best way to reduce power consumption is through insulation.

I however went a different route, rather than chasing increased efficiency, because I believe it’s very quickly diminishing returns...

Well, I hope mine lives a long life.
I have always been astonished at how long sealed compressors last.

Our last house fridge was still going strong at 20 yrs. I only replaced it because the door...

It should be noted that at least my system had the resistor value (1700) to cause the compressor to run at its highest speed whenever it was on.
If I understand the thermal expansion valve would...

Yes.
Then again if slowing it down optimizes cycle on / off times, then you get a doubling of efficiency increase.
I think the new AEO module is really something, I’m impressed with it.

I know of only one Eutectic system that actually allows the fluid to phase change, thereby actually using the fluids huge heat holding capacity.

In truth I’m at a little bit of a loss trying to...

The only real advantage I see in a cold plate is in its ability to store or hold over, and the best way I see it implement that would be different temp set points based on voltage, when you have...

I believe also that John, (Cold Eh) has also published some testing that showed a very efficient installation, with an evaporator. He did that I assume with excellent insulation, and a well matched...

Re: Another look at Solar Powered refrigeration on sailboats

Never seen a pure Solar fridge on a boat, don’t see any reason to do so.
I’m aware that there are controllers made to run from panels direct, but don’t understand the use case.

I think we have...
