Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
I tried a small "fishing" sea anchor as a drogue. Once I learned I needed to run the lines through my mid ship cleats, it seem to work very well. But, it was mild weather and almost no sea state,... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
If it were just me, I'd like to think I would have stayed aboard until I figured something out. However, in this case I believe he had family, and small children. That changes things drastically,... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
I have done considerable thinking, but no actual experimenting. I have no experience with dealing with a lost rudder, none. Initially I though take my pole and with U bolts attach the companionway... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
It is an entirely different thing, when your responsible for others lives, especially children, he had other family as well too. The whole decision process is different, different set of... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
TSO refers to aircraft equipment. FAA approved parts are built to a Technical Standing Order, this defines min quality standards for almost everything from tires to nuts and bolts, so when you see... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
That was purely a joke, plus I doubt many Sailboats have an OBDII port to plug the thing into. |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
Hindsight is of course 20/20. That being said we are a Garmin dealer and I can get Garmin employee discounts. The new Garmin inreach will be released on Feb 20 and I intend to buy one. So far I... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
I asked as I think I my IP rudder was made by Foss, who advertises over 50,000 rudders made since 1978. I don't know about you, but that would be a whole lot of replacement rudders, maybe they make... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
I believe many boat builders, don't build the rudder, they buy it, does Hanse? |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
Patmar, Just read your article, it would seem to be an example of doing almost everything right, and making few if any mistakes, as well as being good sailors. Congratulations, you have... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
I stupidly left a little Bulldozer running all weekend, I don't know how many more days it would have idled as it was really slobbering, fuel doesn't really burn off at idle and it builds up over... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
Yes the key being on will kill the batteries faster, first you have a horn screaming at you, maybe an electric fuel pump and maybe a bilge blower going, low oil pressure light and the alternator... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
You can "temporarily" install most anything in an airplane without filing a FAA form 337 (major alterations and repair) It's "permanent" installations that are trick, this is why you can clamp a... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
That was my impression as well, and why I think an AIS in a small airplane might work. Assuming of course the one on the boat is still working. Does he have no Solar? How big is the bank and what... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
I'd do it if an AIS was temporarily installed in the airplane, I can only assume that at 1,000 ft or higher, that an AIS signal would carry a long ways? Surely it wouldn't be hard to find with AIS? ... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
I have flown the Bahamas several times, all in light single engine, as far as San Salvador where there is a good dive resort. However, it was at altitude, on an airway on an IFR flight plan with... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
Our C-210 L has 90 gls useable in factory tanks, the Flint tip tanks take it 120 useable. I can comfortably run her lean of peak and get down to about 12 GPH and maybe 140 kts or so, that gives 10... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
Trust me, two people with good Binoculars will see more and better than a drone. The field of view of a camera that is not real wide angle is like what you see looking through a toilet paper tube,... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
With my Solar panels and the Delorme plugged into a USB charging port it would work until weather tore up the panels or something and a 660 AH bank running just bilge pumps and the Delorme and... |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
At lot of Mon morning quarter backing, but the rest of us do learn from that. The anchor thing, I had not though of it myself, but as I have 900' on board, 600' rope and 300' chain, that is an idea... |

Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
I don't think ships can Tow our little boats. I can't imagine what would happen if you tried towing mine at 15 kts or better? |

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados
Overwater in a small aircraft is not something to be taken lightly, certainly not the realm of a flight school type of thing. To be blunt I would not do it to try to save someone's boat, except... |
