Re: Another dyneema line failure

Instead of a linear regression fitted straight line, it would be much more interesting to see the graph with upper and lower bars at each year. You could then use it to design and/or maintain the rig...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

Is the raw data published anywhere? I am interested to see what the variance around that linear regression line is. Something that put a bound on a data point like at 4 years UV damage leaves 75%...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

John,
Interesting chart. You have a note on the chart mentioning 'abnormal UV'. My cruising experience heuristically rates SE Asia way over places like the Caribbean for UV damage (and for excessive...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

Those UV numbers are pretty brutal if they are accurate. Surprising that a standard braid cover does little to help.

Interesting comment on 'singing'. We replaced the adjustable dyneema portion...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

The PVC pipe was lead parallel to the dyneema to hold my HF antenna wire. The ends of the pipe were beyond the dyneema and the pipes hold downs were also beyond the dyneema.

The heat treated...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

Gotta include the 11mm 1x19 backstay in those calculations. That ought to be about a 10,000kg breaking. So it matches the halved dynex fairly well.

Re: Another dyneema line failure

The forestay is 11mm and solent is 10mm.

I just looked up the quote/bill. The dyneema is labeled as 8mm dynex. I just put a caliper on the smallest part and it came out 9mm. The rest of it must be...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

So you aren't buying the UV as a significant cause? The break is probably 2 or 3 feet below the block. The block is a 5in Harken and I guess the line is on about 140-160degs or so, as the base is...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

I was using the term core to mean the inner strands, not to mean a cored rope with an outer cover.

Given the size of the dyneema, I'm not convinced it is a very high load.
The line is attached to...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

A little more forensics info. I went over the line with the local rigger here. Looking at the line he believes it is the coated, heat treated dyneema. By pulling on portions of the core threads by...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

John,
No doubt there are many good examples of reliable dyneema based rigs around.
The part that throws me on this break is its location. It is not near the bend where it goes through the large...

Re: Another dyneema line failure

The original wire was 3/8in 7 x 19. The rigging was done by a rigger in New Zealand, so I suspect the line was Australian. It is approx 4 years old.

Re: Another dyneema line failure

It does look that there is some roughness beyond the break. The strange part is that the break is far above the bimini and below the upper block. So I am at a loss to see what it chafed on, except...

Another dyneema line failure

There was a post a while back about a dyneema topping lift that parted mid way. Don't think there was much of a conclusion on what actually caused it....
