Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

The hospital ER is required to stabilize you for an emergency medical condition, that's a far cry from treatment (and only at hospitals that except Medicare, which most).

We carry a DAN policy....

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

Yes, for me Medicare is cheaper than my previous Obamacare policy with better coverage, and way cheaper than my previous private health insurance.

My pre-ACA policy increased in cost annually way...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

Well if I take the numbers in your first article about the number of Canadians seeking health care outside the country, it is a tiny percentage. 52,000 out of 36,000,000. ie 0.14%. Or 99.86% getting...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

This would be a nice argument if it was true. Canada spends less per person and a smaller amount of its GDP per person than the US. So it isn't extra cash, it is closer to being a more efficient...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

Not sure I understand this, as Medicare insurance costs are not based on income.

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

An asset based test is very unlikely to get put in place anytime soon, especially in the next two years.
The subsidies (without quotes) were not intended for the poor. That is Medicaid, which was...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

They must have seen you coming, as I get mine for about a third of that. So far the coverage has been very good. Better and cheaper than my previous private policy.

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

Again, I agree that neither system is perfect. Wait or no wait, the US is not currently providing significantly better outcomes and often less better outcomes for the populace at twice the cost.
I...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

I think a lot of people agree with you, as we have the most costly health care system in the world that routinely does not produce better outcomes for the populace. So until people are willing to...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

Anecdotes make nice stories, but they aren't data. The breast cancer mortality rate per 100,000 is 17.60 in Canada and 17.56 in the USA. No significant difference....

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

No thanks, you aren't adding enough to make me care. Telling people that debt from medical bills is not an issue in the US is silly. And backing it up with its only a lien and they can't come after...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

Sounds like you are arguing for the sake of arguing. The issue at hand in this thread is how a US based cruiser can cover medical financial risks. You have advised cruisers that if they are out of...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

What a meaningless statement. Like most people, I plan to have a stroke or heart attack where ever I happen to be T the time. I do not plan it based on health care available. Obviously large city...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

That's some conflicting advice. You don't need health insurance if you are out of the country, but you should have repatriation insurance back to the US in case you get sick. Who's gonna pay for your...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

You couldn't be more wrong. The US spends at least twice per person on medical costs with no better, and often worse outcomes, than other industrialized countries.

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

Exactly, but it is the devil we have to deal with. Bankruptcy due to medical issues is pretty common. We have a friend who had a heart issue that turned out to be congenital. Still living fine now,...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

I don't agree with your dismissal of Medicare. It is insuring against financial ruin if you get some long term, super expensive disease. Something that might leave your partner with nothing. You...

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

I have a friend who had a heart attack from an undetected defect. The bill came to over usd$800,000. For most cruisers with decent assets this would be a cruise ending amount of debt.

I was...

Contrast this Canadian complaint to a US complaint that a lifetime working, good citizen, ends up bankrupt from medical expenses after getting sick, leaving the spouse with debts and no.savings....

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

It is a single payer, the goverenment, without any insurance company intermediary. Remarkably similar to the way health care is paid for in many industrialized countries.

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

The VA system is a single payer system. You can call it something else If You want but that'll doesn't change the fact.

Re: Early retirement and health care for boaters

Yes, I should have said ex-miltary. The point is it is a single payer system.
So promoting this one as good and some other countries single payer as inherently bad as some from the US do does not...
