The link to Maine Sail's site I posted perfectly describes why the ABYC unfused starting circuit is not particularly applicable to boats with smallish motors like sailboats and most other pleasure...

ABYC says to fuse the batteries. I think fusing the batteries is a phenomenally good idea.
