I think the presentation in OCPN is based on the S52 standard but with a deviation when it switches from ship symbol to a cross. O actually does it later then standard.
I agree about the poor...

I've not worked with icons before. But to test I installed Gimp, opened one of the icons in the downloaded package. Changed it a little and exported as png. Moved it to ..\opencpn\UserIcons\

Sorry..
I stumbled on the basics... Not awake?

The ownship icon is of course without color when no position is available.

As soon a position is there the ownship icons are working fine.

I've tried and the logic seems to work but only half way. Any ownship is used but all I checked, including ownship.xml from bigdumboat, lacks color and are only black/gray. May be a bug?
