Re: Mainsail - Two Reefs or Three ?

There are two types of furling headsails, first there is the furling headsail and second there is the furler reefing headsail. The first one is meant for sailing unfurled and furl it completely when...

Re: Mainsail - Two Reefs or Three ?

That would be around 10% of foot length which is pretty much equal to 80% of the original surface. It would be a little less for boats that are wider than a B44.7. If you furl further than that, it...

Re: Mainsail - two reefs or three?

Re: Mainsail - two reefs or three?

Hey bill,

I wish I was retired! I only changed career because the income as a sail maker is not that great with all the competition from the far east. I'm active as a yacht designer now, that was...

Re: Mainsail - two reefs or three?

But also the more you have to work because you will put a reef much more often. It takes about 1 minute for us to reduce the luff with six meters.
To be honest, I do not see why it is more work...

Re: Mainsail - two reefs or three?

The standard that sailmakers have been using since mankind can remember is the 12.5% of luff rule, first reef is at 12.5% of the luff, second at 25% and third at 37.5% sometimes you will find a...

Re: Mainsail - two reefs or three?

Our luff is 22 meters (72 ft) and the reefs are 6m (20ft) apart. We have no difference in speed when reefing, upwind we always make 8 knots and all other courses 9 to 9.5, it doesn't matter if there...

Re: Mainsail - two reefs or three?

Barnakiel,
We are in your 1% and still very comfortable with 2 reefs and a trysail, we cruise the North Atlantic, and even in winter time you will be able to find us north of 50 degrees North and we...

Re: Mainsail - two reefs or three?

I second the opinion of Bewitched.

We have our second reef even a little above the standard location of the third reef, I would say somewhere between 3rd and 4th.

We have been cruising with...
