Re: Sunset Lake / Miami Beach Police Ethics Investigation Complete

Yeah...that's what the finding wrote. 30 pounds - little things on something like cinder blocks.

Re: Sunset Lake / Miami Beach Police Ethics Investigation Complete

It's been a while since there has been anything written about the Sunset Lake anchorage situation. We had a report tonight that someone has put in a variety of moorings and small 30 lb boats making...

Re: Caribbean Cruising guide recommnedations

Gosh, so many threads about cruising guides going on at the same time.

Be careful - watch the dates of when the guides were actually written (not printed). The most accurate and best information...

Re: ICW Cruising Guides

I sort of like the iPad. It has all the charts and shows me exactly where I am. It's sort of the ultimate flip-book!

Re: ICW cruising guides

When Awesome Dude asked, "Isn't Skipper Bob's becoming a little dated?" - as a good neighbor in Maine he might have been asking a more practical question about the actual dating of the information.

Re: Autopilot losing it's way!

If you don't know where the fluxgate sensor is, the first thing to do is find that. It's how your autopilot knows the compass heading and what it uses to maintain direction. A laptop, large metal...

Re: ICW cruising guides

It's odd how the suggestions fly without an understanding of what type of information you're looking for.

What do you need:

- Route information

- Slip pricing

- Town history

Re: Autopilot losing it's way!

Where's the fluxgate compass sensor and is there a possibility that something with mass was put near it accidentally?

Re: Do you still use cruising guides?

I'd welcome the comparison on any level at providing practical, quality information that's important to the boater. Sailormap is a trivial mashup between Google Maps and the GlocalSearch (Google's...

Re: Do you still use cruising guides?

The ActiveCaptain website could certainly do that. I think the elimination of 1 line of code would do it. It would also greatly increase the burden put on the server. Unlike sailorsmap.com that...

Re: Do You Still Use Cruising Guides ?

I looked. I think your model is great. Were I going to the areas you cover, I'd buy the eBooks now. Seriously. I'd provide a testimonial for it.

Re: Do You Still Use Cruising Guides ?

It isn't disparaging to list facts about when a book was last published and if additional printing has ended. It's not disparaging to say that there are no eBook versions. In addition, I honestly...

Re: Do You Still Use Cruising Guides ?

That's exactly the point. I couldn't have said it nearly as well.

The conversational aspects of a forum don't allow much culling either. You have to sort of read through from front to back. But...

Re: Do You Still Use Cruising Guides ?

But in many cases, especially in recreational boating areas, there just aren't surveys being done. The ones that are used for the charts are decades if not a hundred years old. The economic reality...

Re: Do You Still Use Cruising Guides ?

A ton of evidence proves statistically that you're incorrect. In fact, throw a few hundred boats over an area, collect their data and normalize it and it'll be better than any nautical chart that...

Re: Do You Still Use Cruising Guides ?

Perhaps it might do some good to actually read the piece in The Marine Guide. I've never claimed any personal expertise other than the 25 years of boating and 9 years of cruising that I've done.

And Claiborne was last cruising in a boat when? His books are out of print - the latest is some 6 years old.

I guess you really should experience it and then see how it all works. And seriously, if you get what you need from the guidebooks, rock on. :thumb:

Re: Do you still use cruising guides?

Again, at least for us, 80% of the access of our data is offline without any internet connectivity. Have you seen all the BC coastal data that we have?

But you know, no matter what any of us...

Yes. Examples abound. You have to know and watch for them. We have purchase order copies for advertising placement specifying that the marina gets to write the editorial for the surrounding area....

Re: Do you still use cruising guides?

That's why no one person's opinion can count much. It's the community of input that provides the truth somewhere. In the disorganized discussion format of forums, consensus can be hard to see. ...

But you're proving the point I was making. The pilot books you use have no advertising and you believe they have total integrity. I agree. Totally.

Now go look at some of the advertising-driven...

Re: Do you still use cruising guides?

I think we have pretty good data for Nova Scotia and the Bras d'Or Lakes areas. Look around and see.

But the second comment misses the zen of ActiveCaptain. It's as if there's the idea that...

Re: Do you still use cruising guides?

OK, I guess that's fair. We're not very well filled out in the South Pacific. We also only have a couple of anchorages in the Antarctic. The very remote areas are going to be the last. The data...
