Re: Changing an alternator from 12 to 24 volts

I was just interested in what was possible and thought others might feel the same. Having an external rectifier and regulator can never be wrong even if I do end up with another alternator in the...

Changing an alternator from 12 to 24 volts

I recently changed my house battery bank from 800 AH LiFePO4 at 12 Volts to 400 Ah at 24 V. This of course involved a lot of changes to the electrical system. I will maybe start another couple of...

Re: First impression of LTO batteries

I use a homemade BMS. One of the cells that I got has an issue that makes it leak some current. It continually leaks around 8 mA. My BMS is capabable of discharging each cell with about 50 mA so has...

Re: Connect a solar panel directly to water heater

Here is a post I made a while ago with some relevant calculations. Even though you have a DC heating element, the principle is the same: ...

Re: Open Source Arduino Alternator Regulator

Maybe add an option for an extra thermistor for temperature sense on an external rectifier for the people using that?

Re: Silic One from Hempel in North America?

Thank you very much for drawing attention to this. It looks like it is quite a new development: https://www.hempel.com/news/2023/hempel-expands-yacht-market-reach
And Silic One is specifically...

Re: Alternator regulator field PWM frequency

I think this equation applies to when if you are trying to drive the current up and down at a given frequency. What an alternator regulator does is to increase the current when it is on and let the...

Re: Alternator regulator field PWM frequency

Thanks for this data point. I would expect running a DC motor and a field coil would be quite similar and high frequencies seem more common for running motors.

Re: Alternator regulator field PWM frequency

Thanks for your reply. Here is a nice article about input capacitors for buck converters: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slyt670/slyt670.pdf
It seems to me that an alternator regulator is similar to a...

Re: Alternator regulator field PWM frequency

Thanks for the link to the detailed article. 128 Hz seems very low. I would think such a regulator would need some quite significant input capacitors to avoid making electrical noise.

I wonder why...

Alternator regulator field PWM frequency

I am playing around with creating my own alternator regulator. It is based on a microcontroller and I can set the field current PWM frequency quite freely. It has been difficult for me to figure out...

The nature of diode in solar panels

I am in the process of making same simulations for solar panels. It includes things like shade and parallel or series connection. To get the best results, I would like to know as much as possible...

Re: Need help deciding on DC/DC Charging

Isolated DC-DC converters have some advantages, but one downside is that they are not as efficient as non-isolated converters. The above converter is listed as being 87 % efficient, so if it is...

Re: Need help deciding on DC/DC Charging

Using an MPPT controller for this sounds like a great idea, but it only works if the 48 V battery and the 12 V battery has no other ground connections than through the MPPT (and that would be quite...

Re: Dyneema Thermal Expansion - Enough to Break Things?

I still have stainless steel shrouds and stays, my numbers were just what I would do if I had dyneema instead to get the same tension as I currently have on my stainless wires.

I don't have a...

Re: Dyneema Thermal Expansion - Enough to Break Things?

As others have said above, these things can be calculated. Aluminium has a coefficient of thermal expansion of about 13 ppm / deg C and for dyneema it is about -12 ppm / deg C. Amsteel Blue SK-78...

I was never able to solve the issue and ended up replacing the transmission.

It would shift fine when...
