Re: Raymarine Axiom Pro 9s freezes

We run an Axiom 12 in the cabin and an Axiom 7 in the cockpit. The latter is a slave to the former. We have this same problem with the 7 and it’s usually when we need it the most (Murphy’s law)....

Re: Solo Sailing: PLB or EPIRB?

I sail both solo and with my partner. We carry an EPIRB and we also have PLB’s fitted to our life jackets. I sail coastal as well as ocean passages. We also tether to the boat - always on...

Re: Solar arch - thinking out of the box

There is a company in France www.mpi-inox.com who make a proprietary design stainless arch with an option for davits that simply connects to existing pushpit/staunchions. They have specs for most...

Re: Storm avoidance - I FAILED but need help

I have very strong views on this subject based on both coastal and ocean passage experience. A weather forecast is only ever a prediction. As sailors we shouldn’t expect the forecast to be 100%...

Re: Leaving an anchorage in a hurry

Others have said the same thing but it’s always good to hear a message reinforced….
We live aboard our 42’ monohull currently located in the Mediterranean. Our setup is 90m chain secured to the boat...

Re: Docking Ego Shattered

Hi
I have had many years of docking various boats into marinas. Mostly monohull yachts but some twin engine large motorboats. The best advice I can offer you is that you should begin your reverse...

Re: Melbourne Solo Sailor Survives Falling in Water

While this is a healthy discussion and some helpful opinions are provided …. Sadly this one is not.

You’re definitely taking crazy pills dragging 100’ of line around behind a dinghy. Do you...

Re: diesel stored 2 years with stabilizer and biocide, should I drain and clean tanks

Great idea with the fuel pump for the transfer from jerry cans. It’s a real struggle to do this at sea and a job I hate. I’m crossing oceans and it’s rarely calm enough to do the job cleanly even...

Re: diesel stored 2 years with stabilizer and biocide, should I drain and clean tanks

I too have a Volvo D2-55. My boat has been stored on the hardstand in Spain (very dry location) for 2.5yrs thanks to COVID. We put her back in the water in January and I’ve been running her on the...

Re: Topping lift or no?

YES to topping lift. Rigid vangs can and do fail. It’s just that the victims underneath at the time are usually not around to preach the safety message! If nothing else it’s a safety backup between...

Re: Teak Question for the group.

International Paints have a product called Everdure. It’s a 2 part sealant that soaks into the wood and effectively ‘plasticises’ the wood (though not in a visible way’ without changing colour. Much...

Re: POST COVID ENTRY TO CROATIA - NON-EU BOAT/CREW

Hi Euge - we can leave NZ but we will need to compulsorily quarantine on return. Depending on our destination, we may also need to quarantine on arrival. That makes a round trip to the UK about the...

Re: Forced to change plans - where to go now?

I totally support this advice from @bensolomon. I'm not a health worker and therfore I'm happy to concede to the advice of the experts. The ONLY real value I can add to these dreadful times is...

Re: Forced to change plans - where to go now?

Hur - welcome to the club! I recently purchased a yacht. I've seen her but haven't yet enjoyed a maiden voyage. I intended to sail home over the next 3 or 4 years. I live in New Zealand. My boat is...

EU VAT vs Covid19

Hi All
There are already a number of threads on here about this topic but my question is specific. I fully understand the 18 month exemption rules for temporary import into EU countries. I have a...

This story pretty well confirms what you are saying.

Re: Anyone not in lockdown and still able to sail?

More accurately described as a perspective from a notoriously contrarian kiwi pugilist.

But seriously, let's stop bashing up each other's respective countries. No one country or state can lay...

Re: Anyone not in lockdown and still able to sail?

Re: Anyone not in lockdown and still able to sail?

My money is on Italy, Spain, and possibly Japan. The virus has (or will have) ravaged their countries, decimated a large portion of the frail, disease-prone, and elderly population, and left in its...

Re: Anyone not in lockdown and still able to sail?

Re: Anyone not in lockdown and still able to sail?

I agree with much of what you say here Dockhead but the goal in NZ is to 'control and manage' as opposed to eradicate. Nobody believes we can eliminate this virus for good. You made a valid point...

Re: Anyone not in lockdown and still able to sail?

Let's go back to the earlier comparative - Deaths per 1M of population:
Denmark = 49
Finland = 11

then if we look at the country which I believe you were acknowledging as less respectful of...

Wow! Jim... I was seriously intending to depart this thread but your sheer ignorance about this discussion requires a response. The point I and several others were making against Dockhead etc was the...
