[QUOTE] Didn't folks use sextants for many years?/QUOTE]

Yes they did, no batteries, no waterproof connectors, no sunlight viewable displays....what is your point exactly?

Re: How does OpenCPN compare to B&G, Raymarine and Garmin ? New boat install ?

Yes, but are your wife and children also flying in the drone? No. If it fails, no big deal. If your navigation system fails on your boat it could very much threaten your life and the lives of your...

Re: Victron Controller with Bluetooth

Pretty limited really. It does show battery voltage and state of charge but not much else. I do like that so many devices are going bluetooth though.

Re: What are these disks on the hull?

I drive an aluminium boat that has hundreds of little plates like those epoxied to the hull. They all have metal spikes protruding from the middle. The insulation material is laid over the spikes and...

Re: What do you 220v people do in 110 land?

Most all marinas in the US have 220v on the pedestals. The problem is the frequency. You need a bulky and expensive converter to change from 60hz down to european 50hz. If your boat is basic you...

Re: Warning: Dominican Republic

I've been into Ocean World marina, DR a few times.
In order to leave, I had to get all the immigration officers on board first and give them $10USD each. It felt like the total shakedown that it...

Re: when the other guys insurance company won't respond

Its pretty easy to put a lien on a boat, especially if its US flagged. It cost me somewhere around $5. I had to wait until he sold the boat before I got paid because I wasn't willing to pay to have...

Re: Impossible to Fix Westerbeke? 7.6BTD mocks all repair efforts!

I have had issues with larger rubber impellors failing due to too much pressure. In my case it was blocked water injection elbows. The failed impellors looked 100% fine but the bronze bushing part of...

Re: Watching movies when cruising offshore

I have Sonos onboard and it seems that it will not work unless it has access to data. I don't think it continually uses data but needs the reassurance!
I also use Plex but that seems to be the same...

Re: 10%??? Seriously???

The sign of a good yacht broker (to his peers) is how much of his commission he retains when the deal is done.
Unlike real-estate where the commission is fixed at around 4%, yacht commissions are...

Re: Impeller Veins Missing Inside Raw Water Cooled 5411

A very experienced captain I once worked for made me find every piece and match then to the impellor like a jigsaw. The bigger pieces will not go through the heat exchanger or/and the exhaust...

Re: Kohler marine genset

I have two 20.5kw Kohlers and the only problem I have is that their support is worse than useless. I got a bill from one of their dealers in Florida stating they were unable to resolve my problem...

Re: Kru brand PFD's inflating in locker.

Hi George,

I'm not sure what kind of bobbin they use. It's a totally sealed capsule.

I also have two Throwrafts in the same locker that use something similar and they have never gone off so it...

Re: Impossible to Fix Westerbeke? 7.6BTD mocks all repair efforts!

I have also come across a situation where a zinc had expanded from corrosion and was partially blocking the waterflow.

Re: Impossible to Fix Westerbeke? 7.6BTD mocks all repair efforts!

I see you did check the exhaust elbow which was my first suggestion.
I have had a problem with Jabsco type rubber impellors where the bronze splined shaft spins inside the rubber vanes. They looked...

Re: Impossible to Fix Westerbeke? 7.6BTD mocks all repair efforts!

Not sure if you checked the exit end of the system where the water gets injected into the exhaust.
My engine has nozzles, they were 80% blocked.

Re: Recommendations for the Best Binoculars for Offshore Sailing?

I got a set of Canon IS II 10X30. Stabilized for $550. They are great. The stabilization is essential for any kind of boat. Built in compass....not so much any more.

Re: What is the point of a shower sump pump?

I'd rather plumb the toilet into the bilge than the shower. Grey water is truly rank.
