Re: NAVIK WINDVANE PARTS

Re: Airies Windvane Self Steering not quite working

Does the rudder stay up at the same side every time?
Is that at high or low speed or no speed?
Does it happen without the windvane blade?
When it stays down, does it stay vertically down at all,...

Re: Self Steering by Windvane for Cats

It is not about how "Clean" the wind is but the apparent wind direction. This changes when the boat accelerates and then it does not matter where the wind vane is.

Re: Downwind Running On A Windvane - How Do You Get It To Work?

One of the things to look for is reducing internal friction in the total system, from the servo pendulum system to the steering system itself. The more friction, the more wind is needed to get any...

Re: Thoughts on this vane design for self steering?

The drawings are a bit small but if they show a vertical axis windvane that pulls on the main tiller via steering lines it will not work. The forces a vertical windvane can provide are way too small...

Re: Welding a windvane together

That is right Charlie. I have gone through the whole process from idea to usable single system, then turning that single system in to manufactured product.

I am not always sure if I should respond...

Re: Welding a windvane together

Those plans only show very basic stuff. Even if you are mechanically inclined it will take a lot of time figuring out what is not shown.

If you do not mind getting a crude system working and...

Re: Spinakers, single handed?

One tip a winner of a solo race gave me was to throw the halyard in to the water behind the boat before taking the spinnaker down.

Re: Help with self steering system

It's a Navik, and it is a long pendulum rudder, never seen a picture before, probably rare.

Don't trash, offer for sale or trade it in!

I do not use mine on tacks that I expect to be shorter than lets say about 10 minutes.

Leaving the pendulum rudder in the water mostly depends on the material it's made from. If it is wood, better...

The further you mount it off centre the more likely it is it'll be in the "wind shadow" of the boat when it is on the down wind side of the boat. This primarily a problem on a windward course.
