Re: With lithium do we actually need a dedicated starter battery?

Main reason to keep a starter battery IMO is that it lets you keep the huge current draw and associated voltage fluctuations to a separate circuit, leaving your fragile electronics unperturbed....

Re: Who Makes the Best RIB

"Best" is highly subjective. In my case I needed a dinghy that said 6 people on the capacity plate (thanks, NY State police), which only Zodiac and Highfield make in any sensible size (340).

The...

Re: Finding propane while crusing

@ItDepends we have basically the same setup as you have, but we're a family of 6 aboard, so each of our tanks lasts around 3-5 weeks. One of the 10-pound tanks is currently dedicated to the barbecue,...

Finding propane while crusing

Hi all,

So I've been cruising the US east coast for the past few months, and one of the things that seems to be a pain to find is a place that'll fill my propane bottles.

- Cruising guides...

Re: backwards spade fluke

One side is colored bright yellow, and it's clearly visible on all websites where you can order a Spade. They even supply a (very small) manual with assembly instructions when you get one.

Re: How much oohmp (torque?) should I expect from a sailboat?

I'm having similar issues with my own boat. I have a Yanmar 3QM30F on my C&C Landfall 38 which is coupled to a relatively small (haven't measured it) 2-blade prop.

I have to maneuver pretty slowly...

Re: Tools aboard: Minimizing space and weight

Learning to improvise tools is a pretty useful skill that helps minimise the tools needed aboard.

Just last weekend I needed to screw cleats onto my mast, so I filed an extra bolt to make a poor...

Re: Multiple solar panels to a common bus bar?

I have 600w of solar on my Victron 100/30. Yes, that means the max my panels will ever output is around 430W, but my issue wasn't peak power, it was all the other times.

I've found panels are...

Re: Thoughts on LIFEPO4 Plan

Sorry, that's what I meant by "high-output alternator", sorry if I wasn't clear.

I actually already have such an alternator, however I suspect it's pretty limited in terms of amps it puts out...

Re: Lifepo4 upgrade?

Does it? The spec sheet for my AGM batteries has a lot to say about temperatures, there's even a graph of capacity vs temp.

I wouldn't worry too much about the low-end of temperatures; do you...

Re: Thoughts on LIFEPO4 Plan

I'm going to do the exact same in the next few days (Orion feeding from starter battery); glad to hear it works well.

However, in theory you're losing a golden opportunity by wiring your...

Re: Why hybrid?

Not sure what "devices" you're talking about here, but as a general principle:

- Zero fuel burned === Zero emissions
- A lot of fuel burned === A lot of emissions

There's a direct correlation...

Re: Why hybrid?

These kinda go hand-in-hand. When you design a motor vehicle, you have to size the engine according to the maximum power (HP) you'll realistically need. However, the average power need is oftentimes...

Re: Why hybrid?

Have you actually driven a hybrid car? I used to have a Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid (which is a PHEV), and from just this car, there are 2 things you got wrong:

1- When the gas engine starts, it...

Re: Dinghy dilemma

When I was dinghy-shopping recently, I noticed West Marine and other cheaper brands had drastically lower "persons" capacities than Highfield and Zodiac (specifically these 2). For example, the 350...

Re: Why hybrid?

Everybody saying "I'll keep my diesel, thanks" is missing the point. I don't think anybody is suggesting ripping out your perfectly fine & functional diesel for slim improvements in fuel mileage (if...

Re: OpenCPN Android - version to link to SignalK

It's not ideal, but my current process is that I export the route on my computer, put it in Google Drive, then on the tablet I download it from Drive, move it to a directory OpenCPN can see (since...

Re: Why hybrid?

I've alluded to this in my previous comment, but the case for going hybrid IMO isn't actually about propulsion, it's more about all the other times when you're not motoring. It lets you treat...

Re: Why hybrid?

I'm looking very hard at a series-hybrid conversion when my aging diesel finally needs replacement. I've been quoted $20K-25K for a complete re-power, so that's what I'm using as a comparison.

An...

Re: Dinghy dilemma

So, to go back to the "persons aboard" issue: I just bit the bullet and got a new RIB with aluminium floor that says "6 people" on the capacity plate. The old one was in very poor shape, so we were...

Re: Multiple solar panels to a common bus bar?

Regarding fusing: Yes, the wires leaving the panel are sized to the panel's Isc so no need to fuse them, but when you parallel panels that doesn't hold anymore unless you also up-size the wires after...

Re: Dinghy dilemma

Do you know if the east coast states are among those that mandate compliance? These are the ones I'm most concerned with. Thanks!

Re: Dinghy dilemma

We have a 9.9 and it planes fine with 2 people on board, maybe even 3 (I have kids of varying weights, so it's hard to match that to a "person" count).

BTW, not to go too off-topic, but I got...

Re: Dinghy dilemma

I have to admit I haven't tried. However it's not the deflating I'm struggling with, it's folding it small enough (in the "correct" way) so it fits in the bag.

Re: Dinghy dilemma

I have a Zodiac Cadet 310 inflatable with a hi-pressure floor (it's basically a paddleboard), but I'll switch it to a RIB as soon as I can find one, as I keep it inflated at all times anyway....
