Re: Rebuild my Vetus M4.14 or let it be?

Hi Bryan, when we repowered Mila in 2015 we put in a new Vetus M4.35 which is essentially the same engine as your old M4.14 as far as i know. It's a Mitsubishi S4L which is commonly used in equipment...

Re: Sailors destiny?

Here are more details about this horrible story:

I have no experience in sailing a 66 footer, but on our small 35 we always avoided...

Re: La Vagabonde's crossing

We have also sailed most of the Baltic, and you're right that this is not common there and would also not be a good idea. That's exactly what i meant with "closer to shore" which would include the...

Re: La Vagabonde's crossing

Then you are special. Over the years we probably met not much less than hundred offshore sailing crews and all of them read books or watch movies when on watch. That's just normal behaviour when...

Re: Ancorages N or NW side of Grenada

We anchored in Gouyave in 2017 to visit the fish friday. We were the only boat anchored there and even in the light winds of this night it was a little bit rolly. Not much of a problem, but this...

Re: Running Diesel tank empty?

I'm sorry for not coming back to this thread earlier, but we've been out sailing. We did our last long leg that exceeded our range under power (Azores to Spain) and did not run out of fuel, so the...

Running Diesel tank empty?

Like most boats we have a rather inaccurate fuel gauge and carry extra fuel in jerry cans. We did several trips >1000nm this year and when it was lighter winds it was kind of hard to plan on our fuel...

Re: Vetus engines

The 42hp is a Mitsubishi S4L2. We put the 32hp Version (S4L) in our boat in 2015. Thats the same engine with less stroke. Since then it has run 1200 hours without any serious problems. We had a...

Re: Panama to Florida passage??

We did Bocas del Toro - Isla Mujeres - Miami in April this year. All in all we had a nice relaxed trip. Some things to consider:

-Leaving from Colon is much better than from Bocas, as there is...

Re: Coast Guard using US mode on radio

Regardless of the history of this problem it is quite rude that the US Coastguard is using non-international channels for their safety traffic.

We use a Lowrance Link-8, which is a recent...

Re: How many anchors do you carry?

We carried three. After two years of cruising we got rid of the third anchor that had never been used. The second one had been used two times, once as a stern anchor and once when we changed the...

Re: Proposed cost increase to transit Panama Canal

Panama Canal fees were insane before the increase and now they will get even more insane.

The German Kiel Canal is a comparable waterway to the Panama Canal (i've done both), or actually it's...

Re: 2.1 meter (6.8ft) Rib getting on the plane

While it's true that smaller dinghys can be hard to get on plane, especially the RIBs with a deep V, it can be done. Our setup is an 8ft 3d Tender Aluminium with a Tohatsu 9.8 2-Stroke and Doel-Fins....

Re: Potable Water in the San Blas Islands

From the San Blas it is a day sail to Linton Bay. The marina has its own well and the water is for free and excellent quality.

Re: Rubber Hose Vetus tube stack

We finally did a sea trial today, engine runs fine without the rubber cover on the tube stack. We tested for about 45 minutes, mostly at our normal 1800rpm but we also went at full throttle (2800rpm)...

Nice! We're a little bit behind, planning to leave for Bermuda in a week, starting in Miami. Currently, weather is not looking good but that can change.

Re: Hydrovane and sagassum weed.

A solution could be something like a sliding weight that fits around the rudder profile and normally sits on the upper end of the aux rudder held by a line. When untieing this line it slides down on...

Re: Hydrovane and sagassum weed.

This is true, but at least with Vanes that have auxiliary rudders that can be raised out of the water like the Windpilot Pacific it is a lot easier to get the sargassum off.

But it is still an...

Re: Rubber Hose Vetus tube stack

Checked the injection elbow, it was easy to blow through the coolant passage and there was only a little bit of black ashes in the elbow itself which came out without any problems.

Sea trial...

Re: Rubber Hose Vetus tube stack

Good input, thanks. I still had the feeling that raw water flow was not as good as it has been before, and the exhaust elbow is a part i haven't checked. Will do that tomorrow. Should be easy to...

Re: Rubber Hose Vetus tube stack

The engine never overheated, so that can't be the issue. If the measures i did till now (see below) will not help, i will get the injectors serviced, but that probably won't happen before our...

Re: Marco variable speed water pumps....opinions?

We use these since 2015 (liveaboard most of the time) and are on our second pump currently. They are very good as long as the seal between pump and motor is working. If you change seal and bearings...

Re: Rubber Hose Vetus tube stack

A while ago i did a short Video. This is our engine in our Dufour 35 with a 15x11 Flexofold 3-Blade at full throttle, doing about 7 knots at 2800 rpm.
