Re: volvo penta vs yanmar

No personal experience in ownership, but helping others, I would veer away from the Volvo. But if all things were equal between the two, the extra power may be a deciding factor depending on your...

Re: Renewing USCG lic from Europe

I have done this... You are allowed a 1 year grace period after your expiration date to either renew or place in continuity. I did the latter towards the end of the grace period after mine expired....

Re: DIY boat yards near NYC

Crows Nest Marina in Oceanside, NY is a DIY yard. Take the LIRR to East Rockaway. The yard is right there, less than half a mile from the station. However, it's NY, so the one thing they won't let...

Re: NJ Wind Farm Approved

Might not be that easy... Little boats and big boats will now have to occupy the same space, or go far out of the way.

Re: Replacement lens for Aqua Signal f/40 tri color?

I got a whole light assembly in my garage. I thought it was bad so I replaced it with an LED light from Lunasea. Turns out, it was the wiring going up the mast. Though there is some bad corrosion on...

Re: Tell me about your dinghy and what you like about it

I have this same dinghy, one size up, I think the 310. As far as a dinghy goes, it's pretty good. It planes off with two people, barely, with a 5 hp 2 stroke. Much better with an 8 hp 2 stroke....

Re: touching sand in a slip ?

7.5 foot draft might be tough, though thankfully they did dredge the inlet, so you should be good there for about 2 years before it fills in again. If you're in D15, there has not been a boat in that...

Re: touching sand in a slip ?

Are you going into Point Lookout? Just heard we're getting a new boat neighbor with a 46' sailboat.

Re: Grounding Shaft via PSS Shaft Seal: thoughts?

Not saying you're wrong, but I have never seen my shaft seal get more than lukewarm, even after 16 hours of motoring. Also, while my vent line barb is plastic, it looks like the new ones come with...

Grounding Shaft via PSS Shaft Seal: thoughts?

Not sure if this should be in here or the engine subforum, but I'd like to get the community's thoughts on this.

I have a flex coupling/drive saver between the shaft and the transmission so the...

Re: Long Islanders: Jones Inlet Question

Are you still looking to come in through Jones inlet? I got a decent track that's been pretty safe that a bunch of us have been following.

Re: Raymarine Autopilot parts

What is the failure you are seeing? I have a type 300 that failed a couple of years ago. It was a known problem by Raytheon back in the day, which I found out by some googling. I also found the...

Re: Long Islanders: Jones Inlet Question

It's doable*

Jones inlet is where I sail out of. Currently the inlet is in desperate need of dredging, but politics. We recently had to fight to get the CG and ACOE to survey and move the...

Re: Alternator showing 28-29 volts open circuit

It could be the voltage regulator. If it's a N type alternator, and the field wire shorts to ground, it will put out as much voltage as it physically can. It's what happened to me, but with an...

Re: Topping up fluid in a Plastimo 135 compass

By any chance, do you have any pictures? I took my Olympic 135 apart as best as I could in the boat in the winter as I didn't want the plastic to break in the cold. I didn't see any fill port, and...

Re: Inverter AC wiring issues.

Not sure if inverters can take power coming into their outputs or not (I would think they can't) but if your diagram is how you have it wired, your shore power inlet will have live pins when the...

Re: Replacing Lewmar Manual 65 with Electric

Another reason for not downsizing, I believe Lewmar winches under 65 are single speed only when driven electrically. 65 and above will operate in both speeds electrically. Mine (66ST circa 1992/93)...

Re: Topping lift or no?

I vote in favor of topping lifts... When the topping lift is connected, the boom never changes height as it sways with the rocking of the boat. If you disconnect the topping lift and rely on the vang...

Re: Impossible to Fix Westerbeke? 7.6BTD mocks all repair efforts!

This is also a possibility.

Two instances this season:

One friend has a Westerbeke as his propulsion engine. Its a Perkins design, but built by Mazda. He had engine work performed (rear main...

Re: Impossible to Fix Westerbeke? 7.6BTD mocks all repair efforts!

Full disclosure, didn't read the whole thread...

Some ideas to check:
-Is the thermostat working properly?

-Is the temp sender still working properly? Check if the coolant is actually the...

As I stated before, there is a plan in the works by NYS for a wind farm offshore as well, which is closer. The federal plan is adjacent to it. The NYS plan involves ConEd and LIPA. The location is...

I'm not arguing who's at fault because obviously the ship would be at fault. Im just saying it's poor placement so close to where three shipping lanes meet. Having a high concentration of...
