David,

my experience with letting USB connections plugged in while cruising is not the best: the connector in the tablet will start failing after some time, especially if it is just a micro USB....

I use a HP Omni 10 and OpenCPN works like a charm. I did not see any difference between the PC and the tablet so far.
Right click is an issue in the beginning but you get used to it.

It is sufficient to have a PDF copy of the almanac on your PC.
Actually I did not see it being too meaningful to carry a quite expensive dutch book for legal reasons that I won´t understand anyway...
