I just did that using a temporary wire and, yes, it worked as expected.The A/P shows it's receiving XTE, DTW, BTW etc. data correctly.

this was definitely an omission in the original code and I have just fixed it in version 1.04 on https://github.com/mauroc/squiddio_pi so that now the Boat Yard icon shows correctly.

Logs are created by the plugin periodically (frequency defined in preferences) by transmitting NMEA values to squidd.io via the sQuiddio APIs.
