Here in Oz I often sail our 32 foot yacht with just a 6 & 10 year old. No ones mentioned what I think is a number one priority and that is for the kids to be able to get in and out of the water easily. That is if you are a swimming family. Our usual day is a few hours sail then a swim, lunch and then back home to cook mum dinner. Our yacht has a sugar scoop and a four step ladder with at least three steps in the water. When the kids are in the water, (no life jackets now as they are good swimmers) I usually tire quicker than them. So I end up sitting on the sugar scoop watching them muck around. Dockings not an issue any kid can wrap a rope around a cleat when shown how. Just do it all slowly, even better if mum docks the boat so you can teach the kids what to do when you are in charge.
    Cheers
