Re: Pressure Cooker

It's one of the best boat investments you'll ever make.
On a boat, cooking & moisture are big problem. Hauling the fuel tank for refuels can be a pain too. The pressure cooker saves on fuel, big time, & also reduces moisture & the amount of time it takes to cook. I love it.
My stepmom had one years back & she was cooking a huge pot of kidney beans in it & it exploded, sending kidneybean-shrapnel into the walls. Very dangerous. Esp. kidney beans, they clog up the release valves & you have to keep the cooker clean & clean it out more often. Boiling potatoes... in fresh seawater on an incoming tide is Da Bomb. Tastes great, saves water. As for making bread in it, I've done it twice, & it turned out so-so.

Re: Pressure Cooker

Modern pressure cookers are safe as long as you follow the instructions. I was anti them until I was bought one as a gift, I now have 2 and wouldn't be without them. They cook dried beans, lentils and chickpeas in a fraction of the time they take conventionally; the toughest cut of meat is so tender after pressure cooking; stews, soups and meat sauces taste as if they've been slow cooked for hours after a short time.

I did quite a bit of experimenting with using my old pressure cooker as a stove top oven (without the gasket and weight) last year and had very good results with bread, cakes and jacket potatoes.

I think they're invaluable on a boat but would recommend that you also get a good basic pressure cooker cookbook to start with. Once you've got the basics you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

Feel free to ask for tips.

Re: Pressure Cooker

I grew up with them……my mother used them all the time so I knew how. If you're not used to it, follow instructions carefully and try the recipes that come with it. Often, recipes that are suitable for the crock pot on land do well in a pressure cooker. My fave, what my husband calls "nice roast" is the classic…….chuck roast smothered in cream of mushroom soup and dry onion soup mix.

You won't regret having a pressure cooker. Fagor sells the 6 quart for about 50 bucks. And it is far superior to the older pressure cookers with a rocking weight. it loses almost no water in steam. Besides making tough meat tender, cooking beans a short time, the thing I like to do best is to cook rice in a bowl that's put inside the pressure cooker. comes out perfect every time and makes cleanup minimal. Fagor also sells a 4-quart that's a high sided frying pan. if you're trying to keep your pots to minimum those are the 2 I would start with

Re: Pressure Cooker

Perfect piece of equipment.

If you do a search on the topic, you'll find plenty of previous discussions, many on the same question.

Plus they'll include models and links to recipe websites!

Thanks, I'll find the thread instead of asking for duplicate recipes here.

Re: Pressure Cooker

I always have a large pressure cooker aboard. I use it primarily to can salmon and other species of sea food. I also carry a large outdoor propane pot cooker for canning and cooking crabs. Wouldn't be without them.
