A Question About Wheat Berries

I'm not able to find wheat berries or farro in local stores but I do provision with large supplies of hard red winter wheat that is ground for bread. Is this a suitable wheat for use in recipes that call for cooked wheat berries? Some recipes call for soaking the berries, some for extensive rinsing. Advise, please, specifically for this type of wheat.
