His son took his own life a few years before the author set off on his voyage. His son was also a long-distance sailor, and the author kind of wanted to retrace his son's steps to a small island in the Pacific.
The "back story" aspects of the book are probably less than 2% of the book, so if you're only interested in the sailing, the dead son dimension doesn't drag the writing down.
