Live Aboard Dock Considerations

What is the best way to tie my boat to a fixed dock?....I have the lines so that the boat moves, but not so that it bumps hard into the dock...though when the winds hit 40kph...we go for a multi-directional ride and occassionally have to watch our steps when walking around inside....just asking because we're First year liveaboards...first time boaters....just getting into our fall and the wind and water is getting a little more intense. Also; Is intense fender squeaking normal on windy days? Heading into winter in Toronto as a liveaboard...little nervous about heating, bubblers dealing with moisture....the usual that everyone we've spoken to talks about as winter LA's.
