Bingo, Jim. Morally, our first responsibility is the damage we may do to OTHERS.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Anyone hear if they had a working depth sounder?

Heading into a shallow shoaling inlet, a properly working sounder is critical.

Fair enough. I understood your point, but I was simply saying liability protection is just as important (maybe more so) for people with assets.

I disagree.. I think you having liability insurance is more important for those you hit with no assets..

Not sure if your comments are tongue in cheek but criticism of the young is as old as the written word. I well remember some of the bullets I dodged along the to being an old codger. All by luck.

I meet a lot of inspiring young people. Not all driven by avarice.

Hereford inlet is just north of Cape May. Yikes. None of these unjettied ocean inlets is navigable by a keelboat without the best of weather and best of local knowledge. And even then.

My engine died last summer as I was entering Atlantic City inlet in a pretty wild sea state. Luckily was windy so was able to unfurl headsail and sail in and anchor, then fix engine. Can’t imagine taking that risk in a tenuous inlet.

Ok so they clearly have enough money to remove boat via go fund me. Have they started that process? Here’s the true test of whether they try to pocket the money and run? Or do the right thing and clean up their mess.

I couldn't find an image of the Energizer Bunny beating a dead horse, but I think these will do.

On a more related note, did we ever determine if the keel actually came off?

The 'Keel' question will be answered after the 'Have they Salvaged it.. and paid for it.' question..

The video linked above, the reporter says at the end that the couple is trying to figure out how to pay for removal of the boat, which is "expected to cost $6,700"

Their Gofundme account has $16,000 plus now.

It appears they came out ahead, or may profit.

Curious to see which of the 'Free Boats' they choose.. if any.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

Seems an awful lot of money for a couple of divers.

Now what would be impressive is if they use the extra cash to fix the boat and sail off again.
