So I read in post 61, sounds like a good boat.

I interpreted your first thread wrong and was having a dig (old fool me).

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

More than a few sailing heros of the past set out in unsuitable boats without years of experience. Adrian Hayter, (Sheila on the wind) who learned to sail after setting out, while crossing the Bay of Biscay, for one.

It is called enterprise and a sense of adventure.

Something many oldies of my generation claim is lacking in young people.

With the recent government pay raise to billionaires I am having a hard time coming down on this couple for anything they have cost the government. Sounds like they got a Seatow rescue to begin with.

Ocean Yachtmasters have come unstuck on river entrance bars..with the correct buoyage.. so do locals who do it regularly.. think these two deserve a break.
I have come close a time or two..

Seems to be a lot of people trying to convince themselves "This couldn't possibly happen to me".

I believe it can happen to anyone ,
I think the story of its first run out and the keel falls off is like they were just not prep`d to do what they thought was going to be a walk in the park ,,,

How many times do we see here ,,
GET A SURVEY ?

i wonder if they did ,,
I wonder if they asked anyone for help or just wanted to do it all them selves ?

We dont know these people ,,,
they may have not known as seen a few youtube vids and thought we can do that ,,,

We just dont know the story ?

It would be nice to see more of the 'members' pay the measly $15pa towards the forum running costs.

Ooh... you called me a Baby Boomer. I am going to cry. Thanks for the laugh.

And yes... Millennials have it sooo hard today. Not like back in "our day" when it was sooo easy. "Do I live in my parents basement til I am 40? or can I stretch it to 45? Damn... this iphone 8 is so obsolete. Maybe I can ask Mom and Dad for a new iphone 10. After all... I did take out the trash 1 time last month. (and that was really hard for me as I have a trash can allergy)

And before your pithy comeback... I sailed over 12k blue water miles all over the Pacific on an Albin Vega. Great boat you have there.

Re: Another Keel Lost; Another Capsize

I was under the impression that when a keel falls off, the boat then becomes top heavy and tips right over until the mast hits the bottom. If it took a half hour to sink wouldn't a normal sailor pull the cover off the bilge and jam a rag in the hole to slow down or stop the water from flowing in. Plus look at all those catamarans running up on reefs lately. Everyone want's to enter new harbours at night for some strange reason. I don't like coming into my own harbour at night ,never mind a strange one.

Quite agree and that comment Cruising Cat is so relevant.

We all make decisions that result in mistakes, sometimes with tragic consequences.

Everyone starts from a point of not having both knowledge and experience to make appropriate decisions. It takes time and effort to gain these. These poor buggers were really unlucky. Sure some poor decisions were made, some months before they even left the dock.

But to take an article in a newspaper (very likely to contain errors itself) and then extrapolate that these people were after Youtube income (they have no channel) and will now just sign up for a Give Me Money to get by is completely without foundation. It even states towards the end of the article that they'll likely stay with his Mum and float around in search of work.

And just to repeat these people had been working hard for some years. They weren't welfare beneficiaries or drug addicts. Nor obviously are they from privileged wealthy families where they could just dip into the Trust fund.

Many events in life can kick people in the guts. It is sad to see (yet again) a whole bunch of CF people in line to give them a good kicking too.

Sure, offer your thoughts on what should have been done, but without the abuse and contempt.
