New Sailor

Hi I've only started learnig to sail and hope to have my own sailboat in the not too distant future. I'm hoping I can learn a few things here to help be become a better sailor and choose a good cruiser. I live in Australia and would like to eventually live aboard and eventually sail around it or take on longer voyages.

I'm finding a tremendous amount of information here already. I've been involved in music forums in the past, and although I had experience and information to offer those forums I am a complete newbie here. Just looking to ask advice, opinons possibly make contacts for sailing trips.

Welcome Rigel. I agree with blue noser. Even after 30 years of sailing, I learn something new everytime I go out. For that matter, everytime I read the forum. Great people here...knowledgeable and willing to share.

Hi Rigel, I'll second what Jim just said. Of all the forums I have looked at, this one is full of intelligent advice (apart from what I say) and help, and hosts some of the most fascinating and thought provoking threads/debates I've seen.

Cruising is just a dream, right up to that point where you make it a reality. And from then on, it just gets better.

Thanks SkiprJohn. I spent all of yesterday evening reading posts relevant to purchasing a used yaght. How an offer usually accompanied by a deposit, how to protect the deposit, how to estimate value, how to arrange a survey, etc. I now know even better how little I do know.

Re: New Sailor

Update 2011: I've made a conditional offer on a yacht and had it accepted. Conditions of purchase were all based on information posted in the CF forum. My independent surveyor found a number of minor issues, all covered by my conditions, which the seller is happy and willing to rectify. Conditions listed also listed all the items included. Will do the sea trial after the fixes are in so repairs can be validated whilst underway. So thank you CF for the wealth of information I've found here over the last two years to get me to this point.
