I pretty much keep track of what's going on nearby my boat! I bark at other boats in the fog that the humans aboard are trying to find on the radar screen!

You want to talk of dogs on boats?......let's have lunch. Lunch is the highlight of my day. Seriously, I've a couple of humans aboard,- they seem to be adapting.

I must admit that I am totally lost at interpreting your post, but if you are concerned about the teather line on the dog; it provides the same function as a "jackline" for any of the crew. We lost this dog overboard once and turned back for two miles and success. I teather the dog for his safety. I don't think that California is setting any standard that all need to follow, but if you're concerned about Zorro's welfare, then thanks!

As far as your husband being nuts, the real nuts are the husbands that dont have a dream to do something wonderful with the family. Who cares if its living on a sailboat, climbing K2, backpacking around asia. As long as there are great memories and a sense of adventure thats not Nuts, its fantastic.

My wife would post the same thing as you. We could not be without a dog or two ourselves. Our golden would love it and it would be hard to keep him out of the water. I am still trying to convince my wife that a cruising lifestyle would work for us.

You mentioned sailing schools. I am also looking into taking a basic sailing course in BVI or anywhere in the Carib for a week. I haven't seen any threads about that here. Has anyone else had experience with any of the charters offering classes?

As far as pets on board. I like dogs and cats but, I would have neither on board. Just one more thing to worry about, provision for, get injured or trip you up (and injure you) as you as you run around the boat. Then there are those nights when the owners go and have their dinner on shore and the dog just wails and crys until they get back. Worse than a generator for those of us enjoying the evening in the anchorage. Yes, the animals are happy to be with you but, I'm not so sure they are truly happy to be on the boat. Anyway that's my two cents.

Not exactly.
It's illegal to chain or tether your dog to a stationary object (house, tree, fence, etc.) for more than three hours a day.

OOOOhhhh I like the "as big a boat as possible". I know I am overreaching a bit but we like at least around 30' so far in just looking...it appears there is somewhat and inverse effect ..as you go smaller you can go newer (year-wise) but at a slightly increased cost. Not sure if I mentioned previously, but we are hoping for something that can darn near do it all. Aim for the moon and such. All about the trade offs I suppose. (still dreaming about diving in the Bahamas...)
Husband and I are reading Simply Sailing by Connie McBride- Really enjoying it and so many elements in it sound like us LOL* Granted not a manual on sailing yet, but we're getting there slowly. I have the comfort in knowing we aren't dumping the house tomorrow or anything too abrupt like that.
I have read of tethering the dog on board and I have to admit it may be a bit tough only due to being tripped up. I suspect it will be a training thing much like the potty training.
Found a sailing school local that we like, but is there a required certification for sailing? One that has an ASA cert and the other just says they provide a cert of completion...but not really familiar with requirements. We know that to be a captain you need either certification or a license...aside from that ...

May I suggest that with 3 dogs... and the hubby... you look at some cats in your price range.... Gemini's etc.... definitely better dive boats than mono's and ideal for the Bahama's

I like my dogs in a very light and crispy Tempura batter but BBQ is OK as well.
Just kidding, our Tibetan Terrier hated boats at first but soon adapted.

We looked at some Cat's but they are either priced out of our range or designed in a not so suitable fashion. At least in our green perspective..but again, we still have lots of learning from ye olde salty dogs

What are you looking to spend sailaway (buy & outfit)?
How tall are you and your husband?
How big (weight) are the 3 dogs?
Are there kids or could there be in the future?
You want to go to the Bahamas, anywhere farther afield or just that and up and down the ICW?
