Southwest
Research Institute (SwRI) has developed the first mobile-robotic CO2 laser system for full-aircraft coating (paint)
removal under a client-funded program. This effort was the culmination of 25 years of robotic coating
removal systems development for military aircraft and off-airframe components. The mobile platform carries a 20 kW CO2 laser (10.6 um wavelength), that provides high coating removal efficiency and the ability to remove white
paint and chromate primers that are difficult to remove using short-wavelength (~1.06 um) fiber-delivered lasers. A highly maneuverable mobile platform with an 8-axis robot transits between predefined processing locations around aircraft ranging from fighter-scale to the A380 airframe. Autonomous platform
navigation is supported by a suite of localization sensors that measure the robot and aircraft locations within a hangar.
The presentation will review system features and operating principles. Video clips demonstrate robot mobility and closed-loop coating removal process control.
