Re: What to Do if My Boat Is Stolen

For the original question, you can kill 2 birds with one stone by buying a transmitting AIS and rigging it so it turns on by default when the engines are running (of course you'll also want to be able to manually turn it on).

The subject is still of interest to some, so resurrection of such a thread is nothing bad, even if the OP is gone.

I don’t think [so called] ‘necroposting’ is objectionable, if the topic continues to be relevant, especially if the post is constructive, or contributes to the thread topic.
This particular thread is NOT too old, to matter any more [hasn’t fully served it's purpose], and still has relevance. It illustrated the potential usefulness of social media, in recovering stolen property, and was of mild human interest [to boaters].

Otherwise, if the necropost was clearly spam, then don't respond to it. Just report it and move on. The post is going to be removed anyway, along with other posts associated with it. So, there's no point in posting your observation/objection.

Re: What to Do if My Boat Is Stolen

You got me! I didn't notice it was a 12-year-old thread until I got to Gord's last post, above.

Now I wonder whether the OP ever got "into" boating, or found the liveaboard life not quite as glamorous as it seemed. I guess we'll never know.

Re: What to Do if My Boat Is Stolen

Hypothetically thinking...

If I wanted to steal a sailboat, I'd probably do a little bit of research first. Maybe I'd join a forum or two & ask how to keep my boat from being stolen. (Same idea as my college classes in "Forensic Accounting." A school can't have classes with titles like "How to Cook the Books & Not Get Caught.)

Some helpful posts will tell me some simple things to check. Fuel, water, and AIS are easy to check and enable/disable. It's unlikely anyone has a LoJack on their boat.

Steal a boat & disappear.

;-)

Re: What to Do if My Boat Is Stolen

Now that I think about it it might be quite easy to steal a boat go down and buy a hurricane damag Boat for two cents on the dollar , go steal one just like it in great shape and swap the numbers over pretty easy to do on a fiberglass boat nobody could ever prove you did it I wouldn’t think even if the guy knew it was his own boat he would have to prove it’s his boat and how do you do that I think I’d be quite easy , it probably be a very good idea to put a locating device that would notify you when your boat moves I haven’t been down to my boat in a couple of weeks hell it could be in Mexico right now

[/QUOT. Exactly what I was talking about A little glass work that’s it I’m sure there’s a lot of numbers on the boat you would have to be aware of I don’t think it’ll be that hard

What to Do if My Boat Is Stolen

If you’re really worried, get something like a Spot Tracker and install it somewhere out of the way.

Set it to transmit its position every six hours or so.

You can also use it for family and friends to keep up with you when you’re on a passage.

P.s. given the recent responses, I don’t think many people are fussed about the raising of this thread from the dead!

Re: What to Do if My Boat Is Stolen

The last three "stolen boats" on CF turned out to be chafed mooring lines and dragged moorings. Mostly, sailboats stay put, and insurance companies are interested in whether or not they're locked.
