Two reasons I can think of, but I am just guessing. The right hand side of the boat is the Danger Zone when two power boats are in a crossing situation. Putting the skipper on that side allows him to see that side unobstructed.

The second reason is that a small boat with the torque from a right hand propeller will cause the boat to list to port. Putting the skipper on the starboard side counters the list to port.

I'm just guessing people...ok?

I asked my dad this one back in the early 60's and he said it was so the boat driver was able to signal the car driver when off/on trailering, but then we didn't have high torque motors back then. We were running a 35hp Fagel on a 20' cabin cruiser. My sailboat probably goes faster. ha
