Someone stencilled "grand surprise" on the coach roof. Was this before or after the stick went "crack" ?

Haven't heard much detail. You can see by the background what weather they were sailing in. Spinnaker up going great next thing "bang" and it fell over the side. They think it was the back stay. Had to cut it loose before it put a hole where no hole is meant to be.
