A guy here in Ireland has a company called "Bandon Office Supplies", Bandon being a town in west Cork. He calls his boat "ABandon Office" . another good one is "Cirrhosis of the River", while a local 5o5 racing dinghy is called "Norfolk & Chance" . . .

I rode on a 44 MTI cat with twin 1500HP sterlings also called V1, Rotate.

After the pilot / co-pilot calls V1 (point of no return, he/she will call Vr or "rotate," marking speed at which to rotate the aircraft (the speed at which the nose wheel leaves the ground). The VR for transport category aircraft is calculated such as to allow the aircraft to reach the regulatory screen height at V2 with one engine failed. Then, V2 (the safe takeoff speed) is called. This speed must be maintained after an engine failure to meet performance targets for rate of climb and angle of climb.

Rotation is done after V1 and before V2. V1, Vr, then V2. Makes perfect sense.

You are correct - I had a brain fade. Happening more frequently these days...

I sort of wondered about that but isn't V2 the point where you have to go.

Chipg has it correct enough for gov't work. After 40+ years in that business - new pilots or when in training or pilots not familiar with each other yet -the calls of V1, Vr, and V2 are formally/verbally called out. V2 is normally set on the airspeed indicator by a little "bug" in most airlines. The rapidity with which the aircraft accelerate Vr occurs very soon after V1 and then Vr is only verbally called if the flying pilot does not initiate rotation at the specified point. Instead of the formal calls of V1, Vr, V2 it has been the custom to verbally use "Rotate" instead of Vr to accentuate that a specific action is required. Initiating Rotation too early or too late will result in increased runway length needed to safely get airborne, so the "chant - V1 Rotate" is deeply ingrained in the jet pilot's mind. V2 is the better defined "one engine failure safe speed" as some aircraft have more than 2 engines. It is the speed which must be attained 35 feet above the "balanced length" of the take off runway. All very technical but not achieving V2 means you are going to be descending back to Mother Earth and achieved V2 (plus a little) means you can at least hold altitude and after retracting the landing gear accelerate to the minimum safe climb speed - or otherwise put - not crash, burn, and die. Even Wiki has the definition of V2 wrong.
- - Of concern to the passengers in these days of televised cockpits and live audio feeds is to never hear a pilot say "Oh Sh#t". That phrase is reserved for the last few seconds when everything possible, impossible or whatever has been tried to "save the day" and nothing has succeeded. It is normally quickly followed by the sounds of rending metal.
