Re: Catchy or Witty Boat Names

I haven't read the whole thread so I may be repeating this:
In one of the America's cup series in Oz the French challenger was called French Kiss. Their fast RIB was called Kiss Me Quick, and the small RIB was Kiss me Tender.
They didn't have a helicopter.

On the other side of things, there was a yacht in Portsmouth harbour years ago which was meant to labelled as "THERAPIST", but the job was bodged, and it read
as "THE RAPIST"

Re: Catchy or Witty Boat Names

We just closed on our boat and we renamed it "Reboot", because we're nerds and new empty nesters starting the second (or third, or fourth depending on one's perspective, but it's a biggie) phase of our life.

Named the dinghy "Safe Mode".

Easy for us to say Romeo Echo Bravo Oscar Oscar Tango. Plus it really lends itself to some cool graphics...

We *almost* named it "Those People", because we're fairly sure we're going to be "those people" screwing things up with our catamaran, so we figured why not put a name to the faces, lol. However, we wanted to stay positive, so we passed on that name.

Since we also like Disney, some of the runner ups:

Let It Go (from Frozen) call the dinghy "Sven"

You're Welcome (from Moana) call the dinghy "HeiHei"

Figment (this one ALMOST won because it's easy to say and it's our favorite dog's name. It's also the dragon in EPCOT) call the dinghy "Imagination" (because at EPCOT the dragon is a Figment of your Imagination). I suppose those two could be reversed and have the boat be "Imagination".

We also ran some searches for names before we picked one. When we first started looking at boats my husband liked the idea of calling it "Someday". I looked on the coastguard website and if I remember correctly (it was 3 years ago when we started) there were hundreds of "Somedays"

Along the nerdy names, I liked Sea Plus Plus (C++ is a programming language), but we decided we weren't into puns.

Re: Catchy or Witty Boat Names

I'm looking at buying an 80's 'glass 30-40 footer as I go into retirement and naming it "Kickin' Tin" or "Tin Kicker"

Double entendre' both since it's fiberglass and because that's what aviation accident investigators are called.

Re: Catchy or Witty Boat Names

I once had a Kettenberg 38, a 1949 beauty that was a delight to sail in the light morning breeze and a bit to handle in the afternoon breeze. My wife vetoed "Morning Wood"

Re: Catchy or Witty Boat Names

For those in French waters I have some suggestions which might cause confusion on the VHF:

Forêt Claire
&
Forte éclaire

;-)

Explanation.
The French reply on radio checks, Fort et claire = Strong and clear reception.

Re: Catchy or Witty Boat Names

In San Diego on any midweek morning 90% of the VHF traffic is from Navy vessels broadcasting their location or other information. They don't use their name but always say "warship xx" where xx is their number. I want to name my last boat "Warship 76" which is the aircraft carrier Ronald Regan, but was advised against it.

Re: Catchy or Witty Boat Names

Especially in Southern California, I'll bet you would also be strongly advised not to name your vessel, "Radio Check".

When we were on our way to Mexico, we used to hear dolts just messing with the Coast Guard.

They would activate the mic, hold it for a few seconds of open air to get their attention, then in a low, slow voice they'd say,
"rrrrrraaadio check" and unkey the mic.
After a long pause, the CG would answer with their standard response trying not to sound irritated.

Of course, they never got a response. The whole thing was obviously a scam.

Re: Catchy or Witty Boat Names

Very true. Another Southern California Baja CG issue is the "stuck mike" The CG would broadcast that someone has a stuck mike and for everyone to check. Presumable a stuck mike is in transmit mode and you would never hear their transmission. So I guess I need to check my VHF whenever I don't hear the CG calling stuck mike.

Re: Catchy or Witty Boat Names

Just changed my boats name yesterday.

It was called Margaritaville and now called Drift.

Only took me a couple of years to come up with a name.......easy :-)
