Useful Things to Do?

We're looking for things to do while long term cruising that would contribute to the communities we visit or somehow help the environment. Any ideas?

A Swiss boat that cruised through near here gave talks about their travels (including transit of the NW Passage) at schools and Yacht Clubs. They also organized clean-up parties to pick up plastic littering the beaches.

I thought YouTube's White Spots Pirates took the clean up thing further with her on board recycling machine and collecting data on microplastics in the sea. However, I'm not a big fan of tinkering with the minor environmental symptoms when there's so much to do addressing the causes.
