SHTF and Boats
The fact that a city isnt self sustaining isn’t the issue. Farming , ie the organised production of food is not about feeding yourself that only requires about half an acre. Farming came about because hunting is not an efficient means to garner food. But farming needs a market , and it’s needs civil stability
Hence a City will enforce its will on its surroundings who will then have as a quid pro quo access to markets and civil stability.
You can’t view a city as a walled entity per se.
In a SHTF , being in a city is likely to be the best place to ensure survival , being in a rural area just means you either need a warlords protection or you get f’ed over by every passing gang.

My friend,
Just to point to the obvious….
EARTH is an island and needs to produce its own food, in a sustainable manner.

There is no reason it can’t. The issues are often economic not space or resources. A few societies tend to hog all the resources leaving others to carry on as best they can.
We have no issue feeding the world if we seriously tackled the vested interests and corporate greed issues.

Goboating,
You keeping saying that like a rosary.
You may be preaching to the choir but it is not at all convincing.
This is not a conversation, it is repetition, like a Marlboro ad.

“Rice feeds half the world. Climate change’s droughts and floods put it at risk.” ~ by Nikk Ogasa
Rice provides sustenance for billions who have no alternative, and climate change threatens to slash production. Growers will need to innovate to provide this important crop, as climate whiplash brings drought and floods to fields worldwide.

If you read the output stats for modern agriculture even accounting for reductions in artificial fertilisers the output tonnage can easy feed twice the planet.
This isn’t about food this is about the distribution of wealth and control.

Re: SHTF and Boats
Guys, the topic was about....carrying capacity. We have seen that neither an individual house, nor city, nor island nor country has to observe what any Malthusian think is its carrying capacity. The final unit is the whole world, and nobody knows what total population it could support. The question is moot anyway because of what actual, professional demographers know about the earth's population. I know what they say, does anybody else here?

That peak population growth has passed ( 1960s) and we are entering a phase of population stability which masks an issue that rich countries aren’t replacing their populations and this provides an advantage to those areas that are.
The futures Africa folks.

I thought the topic was about SHTF and Boats, or were your referring to the carrying capacity of a boat?
Amusing thoughts, but a bit of thread drift going on.

The EU didnt do it to them. Greece has always been dysfuctional.because of their own bad policies. Its basically a beggar country that has been dependant on handouts from the EU(,which means mostly Germany of course).

Wrong , wealth, development do NOT depend on large populations. Africa is mostly beggar countries.

I see where you and I are talking past one another. You are talking about today, I am talking about some future date.
The SHTF has not yet occurred.
What we produce NOW is immaterial. A yeast will continue to grow until it uses all the food and ten abruptly stop.
And it is about food, and water, and resources, and a functional financial system, etc.
