New live aboard!

Howdy!
I am now the proud owner of a Catalina 27 here on the Puget sound. I intend to live aboard pretty much full time.
Hoping to get some tips on living in a sailboat, excited to be part of this community too!
Also if anyone has some advice on preventing my fresh water pipes from freezing ( I have a hand pump system) I am all ears.

I’m also looking to replace two of the bolts to the keel or possibly sistering these bolts with some new ones. So any advice on that or people o should reach out to in the Olympic peninsula would be wonderful as well

Thank you!

Re: New live aboard!

Welcome aboard CF, Fox1134. There are a number of members from the PNW on the forum, and I hope they can help.

Re: New live aboard!

Welcome aboard from Vancouver Island. Shouldn't think you'd have a big freezing risk on the Olympic Peninsula. I usually drain my system for the winter out of an abundance of caution. My boat is at 50°N and the water temp stays at about 7°C all winter ... and I run a heater in the boat. My draining is a bit of belt and suspenders, protection against a winter storm knocking out power to the marina for an extended time. If you're living on it, you'll be heating it a lot more than I do ... suspect you'll be fine.

Welcome to the forum.
Living aboard in the PNW?
Heat, heat, and more heat.
Do whatever you can to reduce condensation, you can get lots of advice on that from others in your area or here.

Re: New live aboard!

Some people put rum in their tanks to keep them from freezing in the winter. Others don't like what this does to the color of what comes out of their taps, so they use gin. How much is needed in order to be effective, which depends upon how big the tank is and how cold it gets, can be difficult. Finding the right dosage for some reason appears to get more and more difficult as the tank empties and the season progresses. YMMV. Cheers!
