Re: How to Sleep When It's Really Hot

Thomas Darlington, M.D., New York City’s Health Commissioner from 1904–1910, offered The' New York Times' this advice on staying cool, and getting a good night’s sleep:
“Much may be done by living sober, orderly lives: not hurrying about our duties, taking life as easily as possible, quietly, not being excited, keeping cool,” he said.
“Fussing and fretting, or, as some aptly say, ‘stewing’ about the weather gets on one’s mind and nerves so that sleep is impossible.”

Makes a lot of sense. I think your post and Gord’s post/quote are correct.

I have noticed over a lifetime of seeing people with sleeping problems, that invariably it’s due to overthinking when they should be quieting down the mind for sleep.

Of course when you are drunk or high, the mind quiets right down when it hits the pillow ha ha.

Also, the more you fret about the heat or the weather, the more you are thinking.

So both are correct ways to ease insomnia

Re: How to Sleep When It's Really Hot

I learned long ago its the water temperature which determines how well you sleep. It keeps the night time temperatures and humidity up.

The solution is simple. If the water temp is over 32 C, pull the anchor up and go somewhere else.

It warmed allllll the way up to 25C today! With 39% humidity.

Down to 15C tonight. Might use a blanket.

Yes, it will be your turn to laugh when the Vevor diesel heaters go down and I’m frozen in a few months. Ha ha ha

We now have A/C running off the batteries. Feels like cheating…

We have a boat with plenty of ventilation,
Overhangs over windows
Tinted glass
And pull down shade outside windows and inside windows

No AC needed even on 40c days.

So ventilation and shade make the temperature go below 40c on a 40c day?

Ventilation and shading make it manageable, we can live without A/C
Vs
Hotbox boats without shading and ventilation and angled windows copping the sun's full rays that actually make it get hotter.

Think of houses
The old Queenslander style of house with central breezeway front to back, large overhangs and reflective roof is a far cooler home in summer than the typical modern home with none of those features and needing to rely on air-conditioning.

I have owned both house types in hot climates and from a temperature comfort level standpoint, the old QLDer is superior.

Our boat has many of the same attributes

Yes, but at 40 degrees it still ain’t fun and you can’t do much more than sit and hope it goes away. Only very few people are able to do physical work in 40 degrees.

Re: How to Sleep When It's Really Hot

Depending on the climate we're used to, many of us can't handle a 40* C (104* F) day without air conditioning. Even in the shade with a fan, it's unbearable unless the humidity is very low.

Re: How to Sleep When It's Really Hot

The best solution is to snowbird it. Go north in the summer and south in the winter. Even if it is a hot day in New England the breeze off the ocean remains cool and downright cold in Maine, and after dark there is hardly a night I don't need to pull up at least a light blanket. We supposedly had a record hot summer this year yet it was very comfortable at anchor most days out on the islands of Massachusetts. It's usually at least 10 degrees cooler on the islands. One trick is to seek out anchorages with low land between you and the prevailing breeze, and avoid ones where the current will turn the boat away from the wind.

How to Sleep When It's Really Hot

We r now at 23.5deg N latitude. Ocean temp 89 degF. Cabin air at 91. Humidity unmeasured but around 70 or 80% by guess. Have been out here now 3 months. Zero dockage, which helps with breeze. We do have gen and 2 zone a/c that work, but only run one time in daytime (rainy, hot, humid). Around 4 or five nites with a/c. Pretty much wind is deciding factor. When wind dies and bugs come out, even a shower before bed and cabin fans, our usual fix, are not good enuf.
I don’t think drinking alcohol would help those times either[emoji30]

The current anchorage had 350 boats last winter. Sitting at 2 to 6 occupied boats now. We have a guest flying in today. This will be interesting. The tramp is new and we got most of the salt off [emoji847]
