From my perspective there are effectively three types of liveaboards...

1. Liveaboards that are actually cruising or have recently done so ... these are the folks that actually sail from port to port and regularly entertain other fellow cruisers with an ocassional cocktail hour.

2. Liveaboards that put on a clean shirt and hold a day job but seldom ever sail... These folks simply live aboard a boat in lieu of a house.

3. Liveaboards that can be best described as but vagrants-on-a-boat and are hence why condo owners vehemently object to their presence.

As for myself, I can personally identify as #1 while previously cruising in a former lifetime. My present liveaboard status happens to be closer to #3 at the moment. I'm just saying....

Bingo. And they're the ones who re-furl your jib when it blows out in a storm. They call the fire department or the police when they see trouble in the marina, and they are the ones who call the harbormaster when a water main breaks in the middle of the night. And it's possible it was a liveaboard who "loaned" you a dock line when yours chaffed through.

Condo owners around here use the excuse live aboards are just gettign away with out paying property tax......I pay 12.5% leasehold tax on my slip rental, then again on my live aboard fee....

wow--i paid property tax=--still do--on mooring block-unsecured property tax to the value of boat, for a mooring block of concrete. californikation.....folks in coronado dont like us because we allegedly pay no property tax...LOL

Well, when I was a liveaboard I was the young guy in the leather jacket and scruffy jeans who always had the much younger slinky blond chic over for the night. I didn't have much money but I paid my tab at the bar and learned to cook real food while afloat. The neighbors had money but I had the blond. I loved every minute of it.

I rather suspect that to most folk ashore / condo owners you all look the same.........

As a liveaboard myself who gets up for a day job every day, I find this thread pretty offensive and can't really understand why the mods haven't shut it down.

Let me help with that. I know some liveaboards who live on MULTIHULLS and own GUNS.

Oh, and you can all forget about me adjusting your docklines when the winds veer to the east. If you're laid up against the dock, I'll just watch as the gelcoat rubs through to fiberglass mat. Shovel off your boat in the middle of the winter? Well, I'm a bum, why would I do that? Let the *&%!+ sink for all I care. And as for you condo owners who have an extra slip to rent, you can forget about it. Four years in the same place would have been a nice steady income for you ... but oh, wait, I'm a deadbeat!
