Theres nothing "subjective" about the question. Either you have a certain amount of money in the bank before you went sailing, or you didn't, or someplace in between.

It's only one measure. I would also would have liked to have an age metric as well, or a metric on land based priorities (old parents, selling off business, finishing school etc) and so on. But the survey feature doesn't accept more than one variable.

This simply measures finances. Answer if you like or pass it by.

I agree that th he question is not 'subjective' as stated. You usually will fall into the categories given.

Retirement savings in IMHO is not a windfall. A windfall is winning the lottery or rich uncle dies.

What is 'subjective' might be the answers as very very rich people cruise as well as ... lets say me. I still think 75k for a old used boat is a lot of $$$ while another rich cruiser spends that on fuel. Tiger Woods has a big cruiser until it is parked next to one owned by an Arab Oil Barren.

Not sure how one decides how much $$$ is needed. I personally can not believe the price of a new boat nor can I afford to spend 500k to 5,000k...aka 5 million. Even at 5 million you will be in boats others think are too small while I would be impressed.

I can see boats now. Not sailboats. But I can see a triple engine 35' cigarette boat next to a little engined pontoon boat next to a 16' aluminum fishing boat. Probably 250k boat sitting next to a 2k boat.

Tiger Woods could not live on my savings...just sayin.

I did not find spot for me on the poll either. I started liveaboard cruising at 25 while I had a job that contracted me to work about half the days of each year. This paid for my "break time" cruising. After 32 years of work I retired at 55 and we've been doing more extensive cruising for the last 12 years on a retirement income. We manage to crusie on about 65% of our income. We never made big money, but we never had that phase of life that most people have when they acquire ownership of a large volume of material goods or real estate. Instead, we purchased little and lived on less than our income. There's a great freedom in non-ownership.

I've often wondered what would be in our pockets if we never bought the junk. Good observations: Its difficult to avoid the Kool-aid.

And can someone please tell me...just what is "Retirement" anyway and why it should be the end game goal to start with? Maybe I'm just crazy....strike that...I am crazy, never mind. I tried retirement and failed miserably, so now I work a "job" I love and have never been happier...well there was that time I passed out at a Taco cart in La Paz, Mexico Carnival 2011...maybe that time...

Ah, that's our category also. Not an old-age retirement, not working FT or PT, not a windfall, not rich, no pension/SS/retirement check, not needing to return to land life later, not living hand-to-mouth or port-to-port.

We had a goal and understood how to make it happen We recognized and purposefully avoided that phase of life when everyone extends themselves financially acquiring gobs of useless or temporary stuff. Our coworkers and friends never did understand why we weren't driving new expensive cars or living in giant McMansions or relentlessly acquiring stuff at big box stores (we didn't even have cell phones).

That would be the typical retiree box. #5

If you inherited BOOCOO bucks or won the lottery or just have a ridiculous amount of money in the bank, retired or not, then that's the basturd box. #6

If you saved for a cruise, say RTW trip with the intent of returning to land to work or go back to school again when you are done (not retired), that would be #4.

If you just bum around and dumpster dive for your meals, that would be #1.

If you work for someone else as your travel, #3. (such as a carpenter etc)

If you have a business (say sewing canvas, bottom cleaning, anything…doesn't have to be in boating) #2

Since I was 30 years old we've usually cruised for 1-1.5 years then worked for 1-1.5 years. That's 23 years ago and it still seems to work for us. We have always been really frugal, meaning never owned a new car etc. Haven't paid anyone any interest in 28 years. If we can't afford it we don't buy it.
