Looking at the web site referenced in Comment #9 we see the fourth item in the box titled "Suggestions when designing your stamp":

"Remember vessel images that face left are from the Southern hemisphere, vessel images facing right hail from the Northern hemisphere."

I'm not sure where the authority behind this declaration comes from.
